Sound familiar? If you’ve spent anytime online you know that this happens every day. This kind of nonsense is what gives the MLM industry a bad name and is exactly how NOT to market online.
How many times have you recoiled after receiving a message from someone you just connected with immediately pitching his or her opportunity? If you don’t sign up today, you’ll miss out on a once in a lifetime opportunity. Really?
Hold on. I don’t know you from Adam. You don’t know who I am. Why on earth would I go into business with you? I’ve been at sales and marketing for 16 years and appreciate that you have to ask for the order, but really, this ain’t the way to do it. All credibility goes out the window.
If you’ve decided to build your MLM online there is a correct way to do it. Here are a few keys to follow in order to build solid relationships, which in turn will build your team.
1. Associate with like minded people. Look for and join groups where your potential prospects may be members. There are hundreds of groups on Facebook related to MLM. Join those. Additionally, find groups where people are already using your products or services. You in health and wellness? Join those groups. Green products or services. There are a bunch of those, join em.
2. Establish your own group or fan page. This doesn’t necessarily have to be in your personal name. Identify your niche. What type of people do you want to attract? Personally, I want to network with professionals and leaders who are interested in building teams. So, I put together a fan page called, Professional Team Builders. The content that I provide on this page is focused on exactly that…how to build like a professional.
3. Identify and connect with other leaders that have a significant following. As you provide value and find common ground with this person then you can eventually ask them to join you group. When a big hitter joins your group all of their followers will see it and will often times join as well. This is the viral power of Facebook. You can’t just ask them to join right away. Add value, connect and then ask for the order.
4. Do your homework. It is simple to find and join groups that occupy your niche. Then connect with folks in those groups. When making the connection, you MUST include a brief personal message. Something like, “It looks like you are involved in MLM. Me too. What a great industry! Like minded people should connect. Please accept my friend invitation.” When you identify some common ground you will be more effective with your requests.
5. After they approve your request, the follow up is next, send a message like, , “Thanks for adding me, and I’m looking forward to sharing ideas with you.” A nice touch is to record a brief (no more than 30 seconds) introducing yourself and expressing your thanks. Now, you can begin getting to find out more about them. Ask questions and get to know what they may or may not be looking for. You feel me?
6. Take the conversation offline as quick as possible. Over the phone, skype or if you are close then in person. Don’t settle for hiding behind the internet.
At the end of the day, your intentions have got to be in the right place. Are you just going to pitch your business? Or are you really interested in building long term relationships with people? Zig Ziglar, “You can everything thing you want if you help enough other people get what they want.” When you add valuable content you will become the go to guy or gal. First here is a list of terms you will need to understand.
Tweet= a message posted on twitter.
Follower= someone who will see your tweet.
Following=someone whose tweet you will see.
ReTweet=when you resend somebody else’s post to your followers.
Twitter has exploded on the net and if used correctly can be a powerful tool in your marketing arsenal.
Day One
It all starts with your picture. A Photo of your face works great as long as it’s clear and well done. You want a quality picture that when enlarged looks good. A picture of your logo works too if you have one. Use your brand name whether it’s your name or your company name. This is how people will begin to recognize you.
You will want a customized background so when people go to your page to check you out it makes a good impression on them. You can do this yourself or outsource it. Just do a google search for “how to customize a twitter background”, or something like that.
Next step is to create your bio. Be classy and fun. Represent your self the way you want to be perceived but be honest. Put in your interests both personal and professional. Also add the name of the school you attended and any organizations you’re a part of.
This will create interest in people who have a similar background. If you’re into sports put that in your bio. Also add the industry of the company you are marketing i.e. Direct Sales or Network Marketing.
There is a twitter app you will want to use. It’s called http://socialoomph.com . This is an auto responder that will direct message people who follow you. Use it to send a greeting to your new followers. It will also automatically follow everyone who follows you.
Make your greeting something friendly and positive. Don’t add a link to your site in your greeting as that leaves a poor first impression. People will be more attracted to you if you are a real person and not just a marketer trying to get in their wallet.
Now you’re ready to start following people. In order to get targeted followers it is important to choose whom you follow wisely. Pick three people in your industry that are well known. For instance in the MLM and network marketing industry Mike Dillard is very well known.
What you want to do is follow the first five pages of people who are following them. Go to the twitter homepage of the person you chose and click on followers. This will bring up a list of their followers. Just go down the list and follow everyone. When you get to the bottom of the page click next.
Do only three people and five pages from each of them. The reason you don’t want to do more than that is if twitter thinks you are being too aggressive in following people they will shut down your account. Follow the three people and five pages rule and you will be fine.
That is the end of tasks for day one. You will find that some of the people you followed will follow you back. Some won’t. Also some people you didn’t follow will follow you. At this point you will need to start doing daily maintenance on your account.
Day Two
Twitter is about building relationships through conversation. When you make a tweet only people following you will see your tweet. You will only see the tweets of people you are following. Therefore you want to be both followed by and following everyone on your list.
Twitter has a new policy that disallows mass un-following. So you will need to do this operation manually. There is a website called http://friendorfollow.com/ Go to that website and enter your twitter user name on the front page. Click on the following link and a list of all of the people you follow that do not follow you back will come up. Click on the pictures individually and you will be brought to that users twitter page. Click on the “gear” icon and choose un-follow.
When you have gone through the entire list go back to your twitter homepage and click on the “followers” link. This will bring up a list of people following you. Go through and follow everybody you are not already following. There will be a follow button for people you haven’t followed yet. Click it.
After you have finished this your “following” and “follower” numbers should be pretty close. Don’t worry if they are not exactly the same.
There are a couple of reasons why you want to do this. First is because you want to have a two-way conversation with people not a one-way conversation. Second is because of the 2001 barrier.
The 2001 barrier is a twitter rule. Your following to follower numbers needs to be within 10% of each other or you can’t follow more than 2001 people.
If you are following 2001 people and you are not being followed by at least 1800 people you will not be allowed to follow any others. So un-follow anyone who isn’t following you.
Once you have finished with this start looking at the tweets of people you are following. When you see something interesting to you go check out the bio of that person. If they mention your industry or if they have some of the same interests as you in their bio they may be a good prospect.
Just like on day one you will pick three people this way and follow five pages of their followers.
Repeat this process daily.
Now that you have started building your following you will want to start building relationships. Read the tweets and respond to any that you find interesting. Also direct message people if you like something about what they are saying and tell them. People love to be complemented and included.
Retweet any posts you find interesting or valuable. People love the recognition and will reciprocate by Re-Tweeting your posts.
Here are some guidelines for your tweets. Be personal. Talk about what you are doing. Tweet things you find funny. Post inspirational or motivational quotes. Don’t spam! Nobody likes it. Refrain from posting your marketing links until you have started to develop some relationships.
You will generate more interest in what you have to offer if people perceive you as real and someone they can trust. Build relationships before you start hitting them with your opportunity. A good guideline is to post 80% personal/ valuable content and 20% marketing.
Another good trick is to send people to your blog, and to connect with them on Facebook. This will give them an opportunity to get to know you better. People join people not companies.
If done correctly twitter can bring a steady stream of high quality leads into your sales funnel.

Welcome to the third part in our series on increasing your Google page rank. If you have been reading and following this educational and informational series closely, than you already know, the power of Google`s page rank.
Imagine yourself with a website selling widgets. You have a great product at the right price and you know that if you could get more visitors it would take off.
It goes without saying that a good advertising campaign will carry you a long way, but what you also want to do is have your website appear in search listings, and have them appear as close to the number one position as possible, especially on the most popular of search engines such as Google.
If you read our first article in this series, (available to read on our website, see “Are You Doing This To Increase Your Google Page Rank?”) then you already know what the Google page rank is all about, and know of one great way to increase that number.
That is done of course through link exchanging, which is the ability to have your site`s information and link placed on another website and in turn you do the same for that company on your site.
Then you learned, (see “Increase Google Page Rank With Established Websites” on our website), how not all link exchanges are created equal. Today we want to go over the part of the Google page rank algoritm which discourages website owners from placing multiple links to the same site.
If you think about the logic behind the portion of this part of Google`s algorithm, it makes sense. If all you needed to do was to have links from one site to another to increase your rank, everybody would be setting a bogus website or even a worthless blog, with thousands of links back to their own site.
This safety check, if you will, not only prohibits that from happening, but actually is used to decrease your score, or not make it move up at all.
Google is constantly tweaking the algoritm to insure that everything is fair, and to also eliminate those individuals and even businesses who try to use unethical practices to get their listing up there higher. This is one of those tweaks.
If this is something you are doing now, whether on purpose or because you really didn`t know any better, then you need to fix it immediately, because it is only hurting your rank.
Remember as we said in our previous articles (mentioned above), you want good link exchanges with quality websites, possibly from those sites that rank higher than your own, and you only need one link pointing back to you, from each of them.
In our next article we are going to discuss what is the best type of link exchange possible. You can trade 10,000 links and it won`t compare to this one type of link which carries more weight in the Google algorithm then all the others.
