As a business to business consultant and company growth specialist I am often asked how companies and/or business individuals can benefit from climbing up the Google natural organic search engine ladder.
Without exception every business director who has approached me has always stated he or she wants top billing on page one of Google. I have frequently consulted with numerous web design companies who promote the natural search engine optimisation service as added value to their clients. In my experience very few of these web design companies offer a quality Search Engine Optimisation service.
I was approached recently by a company who wanted me to project manage the entire development for a new online e-commerce web site for their business. Their sales director was particularly keen to establish top position on page 1 of Google. Notwithstanding the fact that their new business is one of the most competitive industries on the internet.
I’ve worked with and employed several search engine optimisation specialists and it’s very much a case of ‘you pay your money and you take your chances.’ I’ve also had to fire several of them because they failed to achieve their business brief. That said I’ve worked closely with one SEO company who are very good at what they do.
The biggest problem I’ve faced when incorporating SEO into a new online business, is that most SEO consultancies work on a monthly retainer generally on a fixed one year contract. Few conventional business owners understand the Black Magic art of search engine optimisation and find it extremely difficult to pay someone a monthly fee and not actually see any physical work being done in their place of business. Nor are they able to make sense of the SEO consultants monthly analytical data supplied to demonstrate the progress of the SEO marketing campaign.
The director of the new start up e-commerce web business I mentioned asked me to prove how well indexed my name and the name of three new businesses I’d built were. As these are all new e-commerce business they do not yet have any page ranking but I was able to click on my wireless laptop and show him the following Google listings.
1. There are 302,000 Google listings worldwide for Dr. Mark D. Yates. I actually have 15 of the top 20 positions worldwide.
2. There are 268,000 Google listings worldwide for Mark D. Yates. I actually have 15 of the top 20 positions worldwide.
3. There are 44,800 Google listings worldwide for Valatech Ltd. I actually have the top 100 positions worldwide.
4. There are 1,960 Google listings worldwide for asecurityonestopshop.com. I actually have the top 55 positions worldwide.
5. There are 1,940 Google listings worldwide for pconestopshop.com. I actually have 51 of the top 56 positions worldwide.
6. There are 6 Google listings worldwide for businessconsultancyonestopshop.com. I actually have the top 4 and the site isn’t even built, or even on the internet yet.
The business director and his partners were suitably impressed and are keen for me to manage their new business project.

How my site went from unknown to #15 out of 191,000,000 results on Google
I started my free guide to making money online 5 weeks ago. It was unknown to all the major search engines for the first 4 weeks. Then about a week ago my site broke into the top 1000 results ranking at #548. Only a couple of days later, I went up to #219. Then yesterday, my site ranked #15 out of 191,000,000 results on google when searching for: free guide to making money online. I use a program called Rank Tracker to follow my rankings in all the major search engines. Oh and I only have 12 back links to my site. So, lets get down to business how did I do it.
Basics- Submit your site to as many search engines and free directories as you can. It’s going to be very hard to increase your ranking in a search engine if they have not indexed your site. Directories will provide a quality link to your site. Back links- When it comes to back links, quality is much more important than quantity. Quality links come from sites that have high web traffic and rank high in search rankings or have a high google page rank. These links are not so easy to get without paying for them so many people settle on just getting as many links as possible. If you are having problems finding webmasters that want to swap links, contact me. I also use free link exchange programs as well. These sites bring webmasters together and allow them to exchange links through their site. If you use a link exchange program, keep in mind that you don’t want to link to everyone. Stay with the quality sites. Code- Many people that create their own site don’t realize how important it is to use proper coding techniques. Using Alt tags for graphics and descriptive anchor text with title tags for outgoing links will impact your rankings drastically. Use a keyword rich website title or phrase people would search for in the search engines that would lead to your website. Take the list of keywords you want to use in your site and insert them as high up in the code as possible. One thing I see very often when I am visiting a new website, is bad usage of the header. When a search engine crawls your web page, the first thing they pick up is visible text. So if your website has a fancy logo without an alt tag, the crawl bot is going to pick up whatever comes next under your logo. An alt tag is simply a description of a graphic that displays if the graphic fails to load.

SEO? PPC? What’s the difference..?
In an industry beset with TLAs (three letter acronyms!), it’s all too easy to become confused. So, to clarify:
PPC (Pay Per Click) ads, or ‘Sponsored Links’,
are featured at the top, and to the right, of the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs).
As the name suggests, these listings are paid for.
The remaining listings – which account for the bulk of the listings on the page – are known as organic (or ‘natural’) listings.
These listings are free – hence the attraction of SEO.
So: which is better – PPC or SEO?
The answer, of course, is: both have a part to play. Whilst paying per click enables you to generate web traffic right away, SEO is a slower process. But it’s well worthwhile in the longer term.
Not least because organic listings tend to deliver more visitors.
According to Tamar’s 2008 Search Attitudes Report, 91% of web-users prefer using natural search results when looking to buy a product or service online. And, to paraphrase Mark Knopfler: them clicks are free!
In reality, the two disciplines complement one another. It is widely believed that having both a paid and natural link on a given results page increases the likelihood of the web- user clicking the natural link.
Moreover, Pay Per Click bid values (the amount the company is prepared to pay for a click) are determined in large part by the destination page’s ‘quality score’ – meaning an optimised page is likely to attract a lower cost per click.
SEO is much more complex than paid search (which is little more than a sophisticated form of media buying). And it’s a longer-term strategy: you’re unlikely to achieve top rankings, for your chosen key words and phrases, overnight.
If at all. Google alone utilises more than 200 ‘ranking factors’, of varying importance, to determine a site’s prominence. But its underlying algorithm – like that of the other search engines – remains a closely guarded secret. Thus SEO remains a combination of educated guesswork – and experimentation.
We do however know – beyond doubt – the three factors that will enhance your site’s SERP rankings above all others.
These are:
* the relevance and timeliness of your content,
* the quality of your underlying code, and
* the volume and ‘authority’ of your inbound links
