What To Do When Your Google Search Rankings Drop

What To Do When Your Google Search Rankings Drop

Every experienced SEO consultant must have faced the nightmarish situation when a website drops down drastically in Google search results. You feverishly hope the client doesn’t get to know about this before the site regains the position. Frantic phone calls and emails from panicky client and demanding an explanation are expected. So what to do when such catastrophe happens?

Don’t Worry: Though, it’s natural to panic and immediately think of firefighting strategies, I will advise you to hold your horses for few days. In my experience, most of the drastic falls in search rankings have been temporary lasting from 1 day to at most a week. Never make the mistake of making drastic changes in your website. You should wait for the dust to settle. If the results seem to be long term, then you need to think of the steps to salvage the rankings but not yet.

Identify the Problem: Once you have established that the ranking is here to stay, then identify the problem. Once when this happened to my client’s site, the problem was the website was down for a week. Another common problem is that many SEO consultants adopt black hat techniques to boost their site rankings artificially. If that’s the case then fix your site ASAP. Remove any black hat techniques used on your site. Request Google for site reconsideration. Cross your fingers that Google heeds to your request and your site gets reinstated. Though, there is no fixed timeline for this to happen, it’s better to get this step done as soon as possible.

Diversify your back links: Very often Google algorithms change and with that many link building techniques get devalued. If you have been dependent on just one type of back links then it’s better to diversify and acquire links from other sources also.

Increase your traffic sources: Many people often just rely on Google for their traffic, neglecting other search engines like Bing and other avenues. Though, Google will be the largest contributor to your traffic, it’s advisable to build up your rankings in other search engines since one never can predict a dip in traffic from Google due to a drop in search rank.

A drop in Google search ranks even for a limited period of time can potentially mean great loss of revenue. Though, we cannot avoid it every time, what a SEO consultant can do is be aware of all latest news regarding SEO & Google and always be on right of Google’s guidelines for webmasters and focus on both short and long tail keywords.

Google Optimization – How To Achieve Top SE Rankings

Google Optimization – How To Achieve Top SE Rankings

Achieving top rankings in Google is very important. So that is likely the big question of the day, how to optimize for Google.

First, you absolutely have to have the right keywords and make sure that your targets are achievable because if you select the wrong keywords odds are that your entire optimization experience was essentially a waste. Choose keywords that are attainable but yet still offer a reasonable search frequency for your industry. Your phrase selections and keywords need to be targeted to bring qualified traffic to your website.

There are many factors that should be taken into consideration in regards to your search engine rankings and also certain things that you can do to increase your chances of success. One of the most important factors is title tags as they play a significant role in search results at Google. They are also almost always the heading Google chooses for each of its listings. Placement of your target phrase is best used near the start of the tag and repeated again in the middle or near the end. For best results each page on your site should have a totally unique title tag.

Google will likely use this title as the main heading for your listing you want it to be enticing and attractive for those who are searching. It must contain a call to action in order to maximize attractiveness. So that you can get a better idea about the fact that Google takes these tags into consideration, do a search for your target phrase and take a look at the titles of the top 10. If you do only one thing to your website, make sure that all your title tags are relevant, unique, and contain your target phrase for each page.

On occasion the Meta Description tag is still used by Google as the description which appears in the search results themselves. Google tends to use it most often on sites with very limited content, or those which are flash based. The Meta Description tag still has an impact on search rankings. However, if you are going to use this tag then keep it short and sweet with your target phrase close to the start and never repeated more than 3 times.

Keyword density has a huge impact on overall rankings but it is no longer the case where there has to be a specific number used and they would guarantee top rankings. This is no longer the case. Density now depends on industry and phrases. If you want to know which density that you should thrive for then conduct another search of the top 20 search results and check out what they are using. Usually the result in fairly general between them and then you will have a number to shoot for. The location of relevant text on your site will help establish the overall importance of your target phrase. Don’t cram all of the target phrases at the top but do make sure that you do position some at the top of the page.

Be sure to include various synonyms for your target phrases within your body text on your site. The best way is to search Google itself and see exactly what they consider to be similar. If you use these correctly, keywords for specific page URL’s can also help add a little bit of value to your site. Consider using a keyword as a directory name and as part of a file name where it naturally makes sense to do so.

How to improve your Google rankings

With so many people having websites nowadays, it’s no surprise that so many are wondering how to improve their Google rankings. While this can be a somewhat complicated subject because Google frequently changes its methods and formulas for determining its rankings; it’s actually not as difficult as you think.

The two main ways to increase it is to create more backlinks or increase your page rank. This is because these are two major factors that determine how relevant a website is.

Before we look at page rank and backlinks though, we need to make sure that your website is relevant for the keyword that you’re kind of right for. You want the keyword that you are trying to rank to be in the title of your web page, as well as every hundred order so words. You do not for any reason want your keyword to appear more than every 50 words, because the search engines will decide that you are stuffing your content of keywords and will not indexed your site.

Lastly, if at all possible you want to create an anchor text link within your web page that is your keyword. By doing these simple things, you can ensure the search engines will rank your particular keyword high.

The reason that we did that first is because no amount of backlinks will help you if the search engines don’t rank you. Think of it almost like a pyramid: relevancy is the bottom of the period, then backlinks, and then page rank. By completing all these different levels, you ensure that your page will be ranked well in Google. So, now that we have a foundation of relevancy built, we can move on to getting backlinks.

There are dozens of ways to get backlinks, and almost all of them are very tedious. You can do pretty much anything you want, from forum posts, to posting some blogs, to publishing articles. Whichever method you decide to choose, stick with it! Most people fail because they try to spread themselves to thin and get overwhelmed. It’s much better to do to 40 forum posts each day than to do one form post, one blog comment, and one article each day. Remember, when it comes to the backlinks the more the better. So choose a method, and start doing it!

The last thing that you can do to improve your Google rank is to raise the page rank of your website. The best way to do this is to get backlinks from other web sites that already have a high page rank. Personally, I think that the two easiest ways to do this are creating blogs and publishing articles, but there are other methods. For example, you can search for your keyword and see who the top listed result is, then try to publish an article on their site with a leap back to your own. While this may seem easy because you live through one article, convincing in them to publish it can be quite difficult.

If you follow these steps and build a good solid web page, you should improve your Google rank in no time!

What Does It Mean To Have Top 10 Google Rankings?

Author admin    Category Google     Tags , ,

Getting ones website ranking to the Google top 10 can seem like a long and incongruous task. There is so much that goes into creating a website, one might find yourself overwhelmed; having top 10 Google rankings only adds pressure. But, if you can figure out how to beat the system and find the loopholes, you can easily find yourself at the top of Google searches before you know it.

When it comes to search engine ranking, it’s no secret the more traffic you’re getting to your site, the higher your ranking will be. With ranking it comes down to, “General page rank” and “Specific page rank.” These two can determine the outcome of how your website is listed on Google, and how traffic is being driven to your web site.

With “General page rank” it basically boils down to the weight given to links which are listed on your web page. This comes down to how often people visit your site and travel from your site to another website. The higher traffic coming to and from your website determines the overall page rank you will receive on Google.

“Specific page rank” deals more with just the contact of incoming links. Whereas you’re receiving plenty of traffic to your website, this is more of people coming to your site from a link on another website. Is your site linked to several others? If not, reconsider, this is a great way to bring in more traffic…therefore, increasing your page ranking on Google.

It’s often believed the Google toolbar will inform you of your ranking overall; this is mostly a myth. The toolbar only shows you an approximation of your page rank. The toolbar works on an integer ranking of 1-10. It’s fairly complex to understand how it actually works, but the Google website information page will go into more detail about how precise it works and how to understand your ranking with the toolbar estimates.

The Google Monitor Tools You need Fore Better Rankings

Here is a list of tools that help monitor a site’s standing with the three big search engines. This is not meant as a complete collection of tools, but rather a look at what is out there.

Google Site Information Page
There is a great deal of information on a site’s search engine standings that can be easily found directly through the search box on the Google home page. Simply typing in info:xyzsitenameandsuffix will bring up information like what sites Google considers to be similar and a list of all the sites that have linked to the site being searched as well as all sites that contain the site’s url regardless of it being a hyperlink or plain text. Even though the data from “info:” command is not always accurate and complete, it does give a quick and way to find out all of a site’s backlinks. The “site:” command is also useful for finding out which pages of a site has been indexed by Google’s Spider. Along with the “site:” feature, there are many other search and site monitors available from Google for free.

When was a Site Last Indexed by Google’s Spiders?
Google maintains an up-to-date index of every webpage in its search results through an automated program called the Google Spider. Whenever a page has been indexed, the Google Spider also keeps a copy of that particular page in its cache. Checking out a page’s cache date will also give the date of the last time that page was indexed through the Google Spider. Information on a page’s Google cache can be easily found through the “site:” command described above and also by putting in the site’s url into Google’s search box and running a search. It should be remembered that xyzsite.com and www.xyzsite.com are indexed and cached differently by Google, so both sites will have different cache times.

Yahoo Site Information
Yahoo’s has a service similar to Google’s “info:” tool in their Search Meta Words help page. The information obtained from the Meta Words pages are things like what sites are linking to the site being searched, what pages of the site are indexed by Yahoo Search, what pages were previously cached and more.

Site Information on MSN
Just like Yahoo and Google, Microsoft also offers a complete range of site monitor tools. Site owners can find data on about their site’s status with the web crawler at MSN Search’s and the time it was last indexed. MSN’s site:www.xyzsite.com works exactly like Google’s “info:” command. Typing that into a msn search box gives indexing data as well as when the last page was cached.

What is the Site’s Google Rank?
Google Rankings is just one of the many search monitors and site monitors offered by Google. Although using the Google Rankings service requires an API key, it allows webmasters to find their site’s search engine position in the top 40 to 1000 results for a keyword. Additionally, Google Rankings also shows a site’s rank on MSN and Yahoo’s search engines. Google Rankings forms part of a complete site monitoring package with another utility called the Ultimate SEO Tool. The Ultimate SEO Tool measures a site’s keyword density.

Check a Site’s Backlinks in Google
The Backlink Checker tool, found at LilEngine.com, is an ideal way for comparing the number of backlinks a site has compared to its competing sites. Although a larger number of backlinks a site possesses will improve the site’s page-rank, many other factors can also influence a site’s ultimate search engine position.

A Site’s Position in Yahoo Search
Yahoo Search Rankings comes from the same people who have brought Google Rankings and shows the site’s position in Yahoo’s top 1000 results for a given keyword. Yahoo’s Web API developer site contains even more search engine monitoring tools.

Get The Rankings You Want

Author admin    Category Google     Tags ,

Introduction

Where do you rank on the World Wide Web? It’s not enough to have a website; you have to get ranked on the first page to get noticed. Otherwise, holding your position at number 28,432 on Google isn’t going to do you much good. Check out some easy ways to improve your page rank and get yourself noticed.

Search engine optimization

Search engine optimization (SEO) ensures that your website copy is written and structured in a way that improves chances that your website will be found when someone performs a search. For example, if your company sells insurance, you’d use words or phrases such as life insurance, insurance quote, insurance agent, or home insurance.

Content

Write articles that grab the interest of readers right now. Include case studies and whitepapers on your site that will give your visitors are reason to always come back. Or even check out what’s going on in the news and be there first to report changes that impact your industry. For example, if you sell mortgages, be the first one to report the drop in mortgage rates. You’ll generate a lot of traffic and increase your ranking. Remember, time is of the essence. If you find out something new and hot, you should write about before your competition does!

Search engine spiders are looking for sites that are periodically updated with rich content. Do not offer content that isn’t useful. Some people try to place content that is rich in keywords but doesn’t offer the oncoming traffic anything beneficial. Low traffic will equal lower rankings with top search engines. The idea behind rich content with specific keywords is that because you keep posting content, soon you will be ranked within the search engines for specific words. So, when I post articles about the different insurance rates and options, etc.; when an on-line visitor is searching for this info they will land on your site and may become potential clients.

Content must be used to provide new and interesting information that your reader wants to know about, offer helpful tips, or solve a problem. This content will get you link-backs which are excellent for driving traffic. You can also post articles through authentic submission sites, and that will also generate a lot of traffic. Many companies publish with different online magazines etc., not only to prove their expertise but also to gain more traffic linking to their sites.

Offer resources

Offer resources that will help your reader. For instance, if you are an insurance agent, and you want to attract new clients, offer a comparison chart of all the insurance agencies in the area so your user can make an objective decision. At first, it seems like the insurance company is driving business away that way. Not so. If you offer your users resources that benefit them, they will come back for more when they are searching again.

Link it up

Linking to other websites is a great way to increase your page ranking. Linking to other websites raises credibility in the eyes of the search engines. Who should you link to? Provide links to websites that offer a similar product or service as you do, or websites that are industry related. A spa can link to its beauty suppliers, for example. Ask them if they will provide a link to your website, and remember to offer to link to theirs in return. You can also submit articles to directories or credible article submission websites to gain links. Good articles and resources will get you bookmarked and potentially linked to by other users.

Include a site map

Generate a site map that links to every page in your site. Search engines like pages that can be accessed easily, so make sure your important pages remain in the first or second level.

Make changes

Every month or two go back and update or make changes to your website. If you let it become stale, the search engines will toss you out like yesterdays news. Update it to generate new interest. Another great way is to add a daily blog. This will ensure that your content is updated daily and stays fresh.

Live bookmarks

Updates happen all the time. A live bookmark keeps track of updates and lets you know that information has changed, rather than you checking to see if websites have made additions. By providing live bookmarks, you are increasing your traffic and ranking because people will come back to you sooner, and more often.

RSS Feeds

Create an RSS Feed. RSS or Rich Site Syndication is a file format used by publishers to make their content available to others in a format that is universal. RSS is a way to publish content and update it in real time. This gives the user the opportunity access information through an RSS reader.

Targeted headlines

A clear, targeted headline will nudge your ranking a little higher. Use large text and words that relate to your website. For example, if you are a content developer, you could write a headline like: “Ten Quick Tips For Killer Copy.”

8 Steps To Better Search Engine Rankings

Have you created a web site and submitted it to search engines only to find that no matter what you do, your site still does not feature in the rankings. Are you interested in better search engine rankings? Here are 8 things you can do to improve your rankings and these need to be done before you even submit your site to be indexed.

1. Web site Content:

Web site Content is one of the most important factors that will decide the rankings for you. The site pages should provide valuable information on specific subjects rather than providing directory of all free articles found on the web. When a search engine is used to find information, generic terms are rarely used. Rather search engines are used to find specific terms or phrases that describe the product or service people are searching for. One of the important things that your website should have is the niche keywords sprinkled in to the content thus making your pages more relevant to the search engines.

If niche keywords are located in a web page that is carefully constructed to highlight keywords known to produce traffic, the chances that your site will appear in a search result for a very specific search improves. It’s also important to understand that the search engines cannot be tricked by flooding the engines with multiple versions of the same page, repeating the same term over and over – these tactics will only make sure your web site stays out of search engines reach.

2. Link / Web site popularity:

This is one of the most important factors that you should consider for achieving good rankings. Most of the search engines today treat link popularity as one of the factors that determine your ranks in the search engine results. The number of websites that link to your website determine your relevancy for a search term. The link popularity or the incoming links does not necessarily mean that you should be submitting your web site all possible FFA link sites / directories or even classified ad directories.

The best way to get links to your web site would be to type in the search terms that you are targeting in your favorite search engines. You should visit the sites returned by your search engine and look carefully for adding links or exchanging links. Most of the web sites today provide an link exchange option. using Google toolbar to see the page rank for these web sites will be helpful since exchanging links with web sites with Page Rank 5 and above is definitely going to improve your chances of getting your site indexed.

The next important things that should be considered when optimizing your web site are the Off-page and the on-page elements. some of the on page elements are Title Tag, META Tags, Heading, ALT Tag and highlighting of the text using BOLD tag. The Link tag i.e. the A Tag is considered as an important off page element.

3. Meta Tags:

Meta-Tags are the HTML tags that will be used to describe the web page. You need to put the important keywords for your web page as well as the brief description of your web page in these tags. Though these tags are not directly visible to the users, they serve an important purpose of guiding the search engines through your page. Although the importance of META TAGS has reduced significantly today, they still help the search engines to decide on the relevancy of your page with the search keyword.

The META Keywords should contain important keywords and phrases you are targeting for your web site. They should be consistent with the HTML Body Text and Page Title. You must make sure you are not stuffing the META tag with keywords which would annoy the search engines. Ideally the META keyword tag should contain 100-150 characters. Being specific and accurate is the mantra to success with keywords.

The META Description tag will contain a brief description about your web site, services provided by you. The description you put in the META description tag should be relevant to the content on the page where this tag is located. i.e. You should not be talking about your product in these tags when the page contains some article on unrelated topic. The description you provide for your page has to convince the person that you are providing exactly what want. How would you feel to visit a page with stuffed keywords but no relevancy to the content.

4. TITLE Tags:

Ideally the title tags should contain 50-80 characters with your important keywords embedded in them and more importantly should be relevant to the content in the page. if multiple keywords are to be used in the Title tags they can be separated using a | (Pipe), though it must be seen that keywords are not stuffed in the Title Tag. Moreover the keywords in the title tags should be readable and should describe the content of the page.

5. Heading Tags:

The Heading tags are given more weightage than the ordinary text. The higher the H tag the more weightage it carries. You need to make use of the Heading tags to highlight the important keywords in the paragraph headers. These keywords should be used to describe the contents of the paragraphs on your page. this will ensure that you are not stuffing the page with keywords but they are a part of the flow on the page.

6. Bold text

The important keywords in your page should be put in the bold tags. Normally the bold text has more weightage than ordinary text. Even Though the bold tags are considered to be less important than the Heading tags, they are still important to be ignored. Make sure to enclose the search term in bold tags when it appears on the page.

7.Alt text

The Alt tags are normally used by the browsers if they are unable to load the images. Some of the users might have disabled downloading graphics on their browsers, or if the images are too heavy to download for the users internet connection. Having your important keywords to describe the images will help you get the important keywords on the page, As much as possible try to include the search term in the alt text of all images on the page. Beware, naming all your images like spacers, irrelevant images with the keywords might be a shortcut to get yourself banned with the search engines.

8. Off-page elements:

Link text – This is considered as an important factor in good rankings. The link text might have been placed on your own sites or other web sites linking your site. Either way, it is important. Ideally the link text should contain an important keyword describing the target page. Make sure you do not use identical link text for every link. The text links will have even more weightage if the text around them is related with the target page’s topic and search keywords.

If the website is optimized for the above points, it definitely will help you get a better search engine rankings.

How to Properly Improve Search Engine Rankings

How a search engine works

In order to get your site listed in search engine results you must first learn how a search engine works, and what makes a website relevant in their eyes. Google is the most popular search engine so I will be explaining google.

The goal of google is to return the most relevant results for its users. If someone is searching for infomation or products and the results that are returned are not useful there not going to continue using that search engine. Therefore google uses many tools to measure the relevancy of a page to certain search terms or keywords.

The biggest factor that google uses to determine the order in which its search results display is the popularity of the page or site. Google measures website popularity by the number of links from other sites that are pointing to that page. These must be from quality sites however, placing a link to your site in link farms, or directories will not work. The best way to improve your sites backlinks is to email other webmasters with sites similar to yours and offer to pay them to place a link to your site. Only do this two to three times per month, if you gain to many links to fast you may get your sie banned from google.

Google also measures keyword density, this is the ratio of a certain word or phrase to the total amount of words on the page. It is believed that a keyword density of around 2 percent is best for google. There are many tools on the web that you can use to check your keyword density, just do a google search for keyword density tool.

The most important of all comes once a visitor enters your site from a google search. Google will measure the activity of a visitor once they are on your site. For example if a visitor is on your site for only a few seconds and then leave, google then knows that your site is not relevant to the keyword they used to find your site. You can sign up for google analytics and this will give you some of the same reports that google uses to determine the rank of your site. Learn what each report means and how you can improve them, and you will see a dramatic increase in your page rank.

Remember:

Do proper keyword research and target only the most relevant

Check your keywod density and try to keep it below 2%

Find sites more popular than  your own, and purchase links once or twice a month

Sign up for google analytics and learn what the reports mean and how to improve on them
