Basic tips on optimizing for Google

Basic tips on optimizing for Google

So without further ado, let’s get into the tips:

First and foremost, build links. This was what put Google in the position they’re in today – they realised that the most reliable way to judge a site isn’t by what’s on it – that’s open to manipulation, the best way to judge a site is by how many independent websites link to it, what’s on those websites and what keywords they chose to link with – This system is called PageRank. There are many tactics for building links and how you do it will depend on your site, but a good start is to set up some links to complementary (not competing) websites and see if you can get them to link back to you. Building links is great for Google, but it’s also great for gaining traffic from the links themselves. Produce some content – if you offer a service, write some articles related to the service you’re providing (you can see this technique in action on this very page). This gives you the opportunity to create lots of pages for Google to index and fill them with keywords relevant to your site. Write things that are useful or interesting that might encourage others to link to you. Put links to other websites in your content where appropriate, see if you can build link networks with other content providers. Use CSS to order your HTML files so that the content comes at the beginning of the file, before any menus, navbars or adverts – even if this is not the way it should appear on the page. The first thing in your HTML file should be a heading, followed by the actual content, and then after that should come any menus or navigational elements, and after that any adverts. Google does not render your pages, so if your menu comes before your content, Google will assume that your menu is more important than your content. It’s relatively easy to use CSS to override the order of the HTML file and position each element exactly where you want it irrespective of where it is in the HTML file. Determine the keywords that your customers are likely to put into a search engine and use them a few times throughout each of the relevant pages on your site. The higher up your page the better, this includes the page title and the address bar. The most important places you can put keywords are the page title, the URL and the first heading (hint, use h1 tags). If you have articles with different titles, use the title of the article in the title tag – don’t just use the same title for every page. You can get keyword ideas using one of the online keyword suggestion tools, Google’s is here, Yahoo (Overture’s) is here. You could also try these keyword tools from third party providers (although they mostly rely on the data from Google and Overture, they often display it in a more helpful way). SeoBook, WordTracker or KeywordDiscovery. If there is one specific keyword or phrase that’s particularly relevant you may try registering it as a domain name. For example at Digital Crocus we would love to get our hands on webhosting.com, web-hosting.com, virtual-private-servers.com or something similar; unfortunately for us none of these domains are available, but they may be for you. Google will usually rank you higher in keyword searches if the keyword actually appears in your domain name. Consider registering your domain for more than the minimum number of years – this shows that your site is here to stay. Some spammers and scammers will register many different domain names for the minimum period possible and once their domain is blocked or banned they allow it to expire and move onto a new one. Registering your domain for longer is an easy way to indicate to Google that you’re serious about your website and it could well gain you a few easy points in the search engine rankings. Make your URLs search engine friendly; if you use a database driven website your pages may have URLs like this: http://yourdomain.com/directory/phpscript.php?section=962452&page=662342. This may be the easiest way to reference the ID numbers of rows in your database, but it doesn’t exactly contain many keywords. Not only that, but there’s a risk Google may think that your PHP script is part of an interactive web application rather than a page displaying content and only index a limited number of the pages, or worse, not index it at all. The Digital Crocus knowledgebase is a database driven system, but notice how the URLs all contain the title of the article – the ID numbers are there too at the beginning of the file name but it’s a lot friendlier than the example above. We achieve this effect using mod_rewrite although this can be a bit scary for the novice user. If you run an out-of-the-box software solution on your website, you may find that there is a plugin for friendly URLs – this is particularly true of blogging software. Consult your specific system’s documentation and plugin list for further details. If you run a blog, try to build a network of links with other bloggers – many blogs have links to their friends’ blogs on their navigation bars. Add a similar list to your blog and see if you can get your friends to link to your blog from theirs. If you don’t run a blog, consider starting one – blogs don’t have to be personal diaries, you could use your blog to chart your company’s successes or new research projects, or you could use your blog to post links to any interesting things you find on the web related to your business. If you can create something that’s an interesting or useful read for your prospective customers, you should have no trouble building links – and that’s what it’s all about. Each time you add an article on your website, mention it in your blog and link to it using good keywords (hint, use the keyword tools mentioned previously). Try to build deep links to the content pages on your site, both from your own blog, front page and from external websites. The links should ideally be good keywords (use the keyword tools) relating to the article, rather than the name of your business as this ties the keywords and your individual articles together in Google’s map of the web. Determine a few of the most important keywords to your business (hint: pick the ones that have a high search volume according to the keyword tools mentioned above), and check regularly to see if your site appears on the search results. Even if it’s not on the first page of results, is it on the second or third pages? Look at the results that come above yours and ask yourself what they might be doing differently. Keep a record of the changes you make and the impact they have on your search position so you tell whether you’re heading in the right direction. Check that all of your pages are being indexed by Google. A quick way to do this is to pick a small section of text from each page and search for it with quotes (“”) around it. Do this for each page on your site that you would like to be indexed by Google so that you can determine if there are any pages that are not being indexed. Be aware that it can take Google a few days to get around to indexing new content. There may be a number of reasons why Google doesn’t index your pages; check whether you have to submit a form in order to access some of your content (Google never submits forms), check your URLs to see if they look like like static pages or dynamic applications – if all your pages are produced from a single dynamic script; Google may only index a limited number of the pages – see the point on optimising URLs for Google above. Ensure that each page has at least one link to it from somewhere else on your site – Google indexes your site by following links. Consider using Google’s webmaster tools to gain further information about how Google indexes your site.  You may also consider creating a Google sitemap – this is a special file that tells Google exactly which pages you would like it to index – see the webmaster tools for further details. Depending on how your site is laid out it may be worth creating a single page with a list of every other page on your site and a link to it – this is a sitemap in the non-Google sense of the term. You may choose to lay this out like a tree (mimicking the way the links are actually built on your site), or you may choose to lay it out as a simple A-Z index. This can help your customers navigate around quickly but it’s also good for search engines as it will ensure that there is a quick way to link through to every single page.

So that’s it for now – this should give you a good idea where to start but you will need to keep monitoring your success and making changes and additions to your website in order to stay ahead of the game – the popular search engines are constantly changing and updating their algorithms to improve the quality of their search results and this means that if you’re in the top position one day, you may not be the there the next day. Depending on the competition in your business sector it can be hard work keeping your site in the top spot, but the rewards can be huge as it costs time, not money to get your site to the top, and once it’s there, the potential to generate traffic is huge.

Good luck!

Is Optimizing Your Website for Bing will benefit you in future?

Is Optimizing Your Website for Bing will benefit you in future?

Is Optimizing Your Website for Bing will benefit you in future?

As many a blog entry will go over, there’s been a good amount of buzzing around the launch of Microsoft’s new Bing search engine. Moreover, there’s been a well-brought-up quantity of rumor on what the growing popularity of Bing — along with their recent agreement with Yahoo — will mean in regards to Search Engine Optimization.

There is lot of rumor in internet that Bing is stealing market share from Google. Question keep on buzzing in our mind

1. What if Bing, after the initial buzz around their launch upland, begins to steadily challenge Google’s long standing dominance both in market share and SEO focus?

2. What can I do now to start making sure my site is well optimized for Bing so that I’m not playing catch up a year from now when all of my competitors are ranking well within both Google and Bing?

In response to the first question, what seems to be the common theme in most responses to this by industry experts is that Google for a long time now hasn’t had a realistic challenger to its search dominance, allowing them to focus on side projects such as the recently announced Chrome OS, upcoming Google Wave, and Cloud applications such as Google Documents.

What you’ll most likely see as Bing becomes a stronger competitor in the realm of Search, is that Google will begin — as it has already with the May launch of their “Show Options” feature — to release features to better compete with some of Bing’s advertised advantages over Google.

While many of these changes will be designed to enhance and better organize results, many believe the recent competition imposing by Bing will benefit visitors looking for relevant results, as well as sites looking to have them found for relevant queries.

In response to the second question, the answer is to continue to focus on the same SEO best practices you’ve been focusing on.  The type of SEO work and tasks webmasters need to perform to be successful in Bing haven’t changed — all of the skills and knowledge that webmasters have invested in previously applies fully today with Bing. Moreover, investments in solid, reputable SEO work made for Bing will bring similar improvements in your website’s page rank in Google and Yahoo! as well.

SEO task you should do for Bing optimization for your website.

* Unique, keyword-oriented Titles and Meta Descriptions for ever page of your site

* Keyword-oriented, clean and well-structured URLs

* Singular themes per page with keyword-oriented content in reference to your page’s theme

* Submission of a well structured and relevant XML sitemap to Bing’s Webmaster Center

* Submission of your site to Bing using Bing’s Ping service

There still certain factors while starting SEO service for Bing search engine such as the quality of your inbound links, along with other standard SEO best practices play significant roles.

While the same SEO best practices will assist your site’s ranking within Bing, some of these items — according to initial studies — seem to play a greater role with Bing than they do with Google.  Meta Descriptions is one example. Currently, Bing places more importance on the quality of your Meta Descriptions than Google does.

What this means for some sites is that focusing on these same SEO practices, with a tighter focus on the quality of your Meta Descriptions and quality, unique content can help even sites reliant on longer-tail searches be more visible, due to different user behavior on Bing.  This is true as well with a more local-focus being presented by Bing. It is reported that Bing is weighting local results in a more aggressive manner than Google.

Of course, with Bing being relatively new, things could change as the competition with Google heats up. The advent of new features and options — some of which will focus on micro formats, RDF and other advanced SEO practices — is sure to keep this space dynamic as well.

Optimizing For Different Search Engines!

Optimizing For Different Search Engines!

Optimizing for Different Search Engines!

Many times in the web site optimization process we all seem to forget that there are three major search engines we should consider. We all understand that Google is the leader when a person thinks of search engines and the term “Google It” has become a household phrase. Yahoo has acquired about 25% of the market and some reports that MSN has earned from 10-15% of the market. Even though MSN’s share of the market is less than the other engines, the users of MSN are truly loyal.

The algorithms of MSN are different than Google and Yahoo, however, there are some rules in the various engines that are used by all the search engines. Just because you rank well with Google and Yahoo, you may not rank well with MSN because of some of their algorithm differences. If you are optimizing specifically for MSN ranking, make sure you keep an eye on your Google and Yahoo rankings. Ranking on top with MSN will likely be ranked low with Google. For online effectiveness you would be wise to have Google on top and MSN on the bottom. The secret here is to build your site with a proper structures that will work with all the big three of the top search engines.

There are specific reasons why this happens. Even though the web site pages spidered by the different engines may be the same, the different algorithms used by the various engines will produce a different search result. All search engines will spider a page and then index the information into their database….then applies their algorithms to the pages spidered and ranks you accordingly.

It appears on the surface that the MSN algorithm is not as advanced as Google and Yahoo, however, that philosophy will be challenged by some experts. MSN focuses more on the metatags than Google and Yahoo. Even though metatags are important to all engines, MSN places a lot of credence on the use of metatags. There are differences between the search engines in the use of keywords. It appears that MSN places more emphasis on keywords than the competition does.

Even though MSN puts more emphasis on keywords than the other engines, be very cautious of not over doing the keyword aspects on your web site source code as well as the keywords in your content. Make sure you don’t over do the keyword density for the sake of MSN and then be penalized by Google. Make sure you understand the ratio the individual engines are looking for. Anymore than 5-7% ratio with Google may cause you some problems…..over doing it here could even get you banned on Google. If you make one page for Google and another for MSN….Google may nail you for duplicate content. Do some research here and know what your limitations are before you over do anything in this process. There is a balance that must be maintained here, so if you don’t understand this process, seek the help of a professional optimization specialist.

One important point here is that if you build your site to please MSN and stuff your source code and web content with keywords, you may do well with MSN, but be in trouble with Google. However, if your site is optimized correctly you will do well with Google, rank well with Yahoo plus have a respectable position with MSN. You may have to experiment a bit with the proper balance for your site depending on how your site is structured right now.

Well written Meta Tags are an important part of all the different search engine algorithms. Since MSN puts more emphasis on Meta Tags than the other engines, some thought when writing your metatags will help you gain popularity with all the engines. Note….do not keyword stuff your metatags….use some good common sense here…it will save you some bitter consequences later on.

Some advise on the descriptive metatag in your source code is vitally important. This is one of the key factors MSN uses to classify your web site. Leaving this area blank will eliminate any chance of getting recognized by MSN. If you leave the Content=”" section in the source code empty in your site you have just sealed any chance of making any kind of internet presence with the search engines.

Optimizing Your Dating Site: Getting it Found on Google

Optimizing Your Dating Site: Getting it Found on Google

So you have laboured intensively over your PHP, CSS, and HTML for months and months to finally unveil your ultimate masterpiece: a unique dating website with the most advanced chat and dating features available.  Or, perhaps you finally pulled out the old credit card and purchased a readymade script, and have finally figured out how to successfully upload the thing onto the net.  Either way, I’m sure you’ve already decided on the niche you plan to fill, be it for a specific geographical location, or a specific group or subculture.  After all, creating a general and international site may seem appealing at first, but that niche has been way overfilled.  Besides, who wants to join a dating website where the other 16 members are dispersed all over the globe?   Nevertheless, the days and weeks are passing by, and the members you thought would flock to your new and amazing creation just aren’t coming, and even your closest friends aren’t checking their profiles anymore.  It’s time to get your dating website noticed.  It’s time to get found on Google.

The process of getting your website found on the search engines is called SEO (Search Engine Optimization), and the search engine you need to concentrate most of your efforts on is Google.  Google is now king of the hill, and if you can impress this great king, it’s likely you will also impress the rest of the nobles (i.e. Yahoo, MSN, etc.).  This will not be an easy task, as there are millions of other worthy subjects also desperately vying for Google’s attention. Unfortunately, Google only has room for so many at the head table.  This is because the majority of internet searches never go beyond the first two pages. So if you’re not in the top 20 for at least one keyword or phrase, you might as well not even exist.  So no matter how awesome you think your new dating site is, and no matter how much your friends say they like it, it will take a significant number of members to call the thing a success.  So unless you’re planning on doing some local advertising, which can be a good idea at times, your best bet is to vie for one of these cherished positions.

The first thing you have to do is pick your keywords and phrases.  These are the words and phrases that people will type into Google and ultimately find your site.  Unless you have picked a domain name that already contains your keywords, like datingdivorcedgrandmothers.com, you will have to figure out what words people are already searching for in regards to your unique niche, and create a title tag with these words.  The best way to do this is to find keyword tools on the internet to help you figure out what people are searching for.  Opening up a Google Adwords account can be a great idea, if for nothing else but to use Google’s keyword tool.  This will tell you how many times certain words and phrases are searched for every month.  You’ll want to pick words and phrases that are relevant to your site, and that get searched for a moderate amount of times each month.  You don’t want to try to optimize your site for the keyword dating, because there is simply too much competition. And unless you plan to spend a million dollars a year on an SEO company, as many of these sites are doing, you won’t stand a chance. Your best efforts are spent fighting for keyphrases like divorced dating or Detroit dating. Better yet: divorced dating in Detroit.

When you’ve figured out what keywords you’re going to vie for, it’s time to make sure you’ve placed these words in your title tags.  I’m always surprised at how many new dating sites are using their actual name for the title. Nobody will be searching for: thegreatloveboutique.com, unless of course they’ve heard it somewhere.  Once again, think of the words people will be using in their actual searches that could lead them to your site.  When you’ve placed these words in your title tags, changing them up a bit for each page of your site, you then need to make sure you’ve also placed them in your meta-tags, along with dispersing them throughout the content of your site.  You can even place these keywords in your alt tags for images, and title tags for links.  However, don’t go overboard.  If you use these keywords too much, Google will penalize you for what they call spamming. Try to keep it as natural as you can. If you don’t know how to do any of this, your best bet is to Google how.  Without knowing how to do this, you’re site really doesn’t stand a chance.

Although there is a great deal more you should learn about onsite optimization (what you do to your site to get found), the majority of your time should be spent on acquiring links for your site (offsite optimization).  This is when another website links to your website.  Google considers this a kind of vote, and the more votes you get, especially from similar sites, the more Google will push you up the ranks.  Now here is the process I would go through.  First, submit your site to as many dating directories as you can.  You should start with the high PR (PageRank) sites, and move your way down.  If you don’t have a Google toolbar that shows PageRank at the top of your screen, get one.  Google it and download one.  The higher the PageRank, the more valuable the link will be back to yours.  And the more links you get, the more PageRank you will get (just be warned that Google only updates their PageRank on the screen ever few months).  Many of these directories will ask for you to link back to them.  This is called a reciprocal link, and it’s a bit of a pain in the neck.  If you know how to enter links into your code, do so at your best discretion.  Reciprocal links can help, especially if they are from a relevant and high PR site, but they are not as valuable as a one-way link.

When you’re done with directories, it would also be a good idea to look for other dating sites that might want to trade links with you. However, be warned.  Many dating sites will require you to first give them a link before they consider your site.  You then take the time to enter their link on your site, and you never do hear back from them.  Even though most website owners eventually remove the links to sites that never link back, these mean sites count on the few who don’t check.  After a few weeks of trading links with dating sites and directories, you will likely want to put your head into a noose. The dishonesty and selfishness of even the most successful dating sites will absolutely astonish you.  If you’re ambitious, you will monitor your backlinks (links to your site) every few months, because some sites will remove them to make your reciprocal link a one-way link from you to them.

All in all, however, directory links, reciprocal links, and 3-way links are not worth that much anymore.  This is because Google is hoping sites acquire links the natural way. This would happen if someone really likes your site and adds a link to it from their own relevant site.  If they use your keywords in the link, this link becomes even more valuable.  However, you’ll find out eventually that not many people do this, unless a site is really, really amazing, or the content is especially unique or incredible.  Nevertheless, it’s always a good idea to try to solicit links from people who do find your site.  The best way to do this is to offer up a textarea box that contains your link code, using your keywords as the link or anchor text.  Above the code can you can place a nice little note soliciting a link.  Once again, not many site owners will do this for nothing, but every now and again you might be pleasantly surprised.  Just don’t promise them a link back unless you’re actually intending to consider it.  Way too many dating sites already practice this dishonest behaviour.  Then, when your link requests have been strategically placed throughout your site, where admiring visitors can find them, you will probably want to consider advertising.  Google Adwords now provides one of the most cost-effective ways of advertising. This advertising is targeted, so people looking for a particular dating site can find yours, at least until your site works its way up the ranks and gets found that way.  Best of luck.

Why Optimizing is Important – Title Tags

Why Optimizing is Important – Title Tags

While doing niche and keyword research with one of my favorite tools, Ad Word Analyzer, I did a search on the keyword “optimizing”. One of the keyword phrases Ad Word Analyzer brought up under the search on optimizing was “optimizing title tags page”. Not that this phrase is unique in any way, but the results were different enough that they caught my eye. Any Internet marketer will tell you search engine optimization or SEO, is a hot topic because without proper SEO, targeted traffic to your Adword ads, website or blog is non-existent.

What caught my eye about the keyword phrase “optimizing title tags pages”, were the amount of searches done last month and the results Google produced for “optimizing title tags page”. One thousand four hundred and ten people searched with the keywords “optimizing title tags page” last month and Google produced a grand total of four results. Four results for “optimizing title tags pages” on the whole of Google. These results were not much help to people searching “optimizing title tags page”.

Ad Word Analyzer is great tool for locating these anomalies when doing market research on a new niche, keywords or for article writing. What this search revealed to me is there must be a sufficient amount of confusion when it comes to SEO. One thousand four hundred and ten people searched “optimizing title tags page” with only four results. There also were no Google Adwords ads. Some may think they have no idea what Google Adwords are, but they really do since any person that has used Google has seen Google Adwords ads on the right side of any Google page. These ads, located on the right side of any Google page, are Google Adwords ads. Advertisements put their by Internet marketers to sell us products and services. Not one Google Adwords ad was accounted for when people searched “optimizing title tags page”.

Most importantly, the people that searched “optimizing title tags page” were probably looking for help optimizing meta tags. Internet marketers know that meta tag optimization is a minimal factor now that SEO hinges on relevancy and fresh new content for optimal page rank among the search engines. This is why I believe there is a total absence of Google Adword ads when someone searches “optimizing title tags page”. Internet marketers get charged per click each time their ad is clicked by a web surfer. So it is in the best interest of the Internet marketer to do his research and optimize his Google Adwords ad for specific and targeted traffic. Wasted clicks can be financially devastating to a Google Adwords campaign.

One other lucrative point that Ad Word Analyzer revealed to me that succeeded in motivating me to research this anomalie further. One thousand four hundred and ten people searched the keyword phrase “optimizing title tags page” last month and I am sure about the same amount of people will do the same this month. Which means there is a market out there of people that need information to bring them up to speed on search engine optimization. Ad Word Analyzer is warming up for my next Google Adwords campaign targeting these people.

Optimizing Websites For Google

Optimizing Websites For Google

In today’s competitive online market, anyone who is even a casual browser is aware of how important Google is to any business. Chances are, the bulk of your customers will be finding out about your business via Google, and whether you offer high-tech communication solutions or knitting supplies, you can bet that your sales will be affected by the position that your website occupies on a list of natural Google results. While you can certainly do your best to make a good site that is optimized for the Google search engine, there are many specific strategies that you can use to ensure that your website gets the traffic it needs.

The first and most obvious place to make your improvements is on the page itself. What do you offer in terms of good content? The Google search engine will search for context as well as content and through having good material on your site -articles, industry-specific glossaries and essays, to name a few- you’ll be that much more attractive to Google. Essentially, you are looking to optimize your use of keywords and the context that they come in. Part of this is simply making sure that you have a good site that gives the people they want, but remember that it does go beyond that.

Keyword density, the amount of time that a word or phrase is used on your site, is an important factor to keep in mind. Research is often done to ensure that they keywords that you are using will bring the right customers to your website. If the content of your site is too general, you’ll will end up not being specific enough and so loose relevance! Try to put yourself in the mind of someone who doesn’t even know what your service is. What questions is this person going to be asking themselves, and what should you do to draw them to you?

When you are planning to optimize your site for Google’s search engine, you should also remember that work should be done off your site as well. One thing that the Google search engine will judge you on is how many other sites will link to yours. If you are in a specialized business, where competitors are offering the precise same service that you are, there is a certain cachet in being a site that is linked to, which is something that Google has decided to use as a measure of your worth. Link building is the process whereby people make themselves more attractive to the Google search engine by ensuring that their link is everywhere. Remember that reciprocal links do not hold as much weight any more and so you should try to stick to one way links; while they can be very handy for building a rapport with other sites or businesses, keep in mind the fact that they are not appropriate tools when it comes time to help you with link building.

As you can see, making sure that your website gets the highest rank possible from the Google search engine is something of a full-time job. Make sure that you understand these basic concepts before you try to revolutionize the world with your web marketing abilities.

Optimizing For Google Image Searches

Optimizing For Google Image Searches

Most people know how to do SEO for Google’s main search function, but doing SEO for Google Image Search is a bit different. If you’ve got a lot of images you want to make certain Google Image Search picks up, here are some tips to make those images attract Google’s attention. Many of these tips also work with MSN’s and Yahoo’s image search functions.

Google’s Image Search is done by the Google Image bot. This little web spider goes out and indexes images, much like the main search bot indexes web pages. However, the image bot doesn’t visit pages nearly as frequently. In fact, it might hit a website once every six months or so. This means if you put up new images the day after the bot visits, those images may not be indexed for half a year!

So how can you make certain your images are picked up and ranked well? By knowing how to appeal to this little image bot, that’s how. First, remember that the Google bot doesn’t actually see your image – it doesn’t know the visual different between a black square and the Mona Lisa. What it does see is your description of the image, so you have to make certain that description is incredibly well done. There are four things to work on here.

The first is your ALT text. This is the text that appears on your site if, for whatever reason, your image does not load. Basically, you want it to describe your image in detail. Be sure to get several keywords into the ALT text. For example, a floral site may describe a bouquet of red roses with ALT text similar to “This beautiful bouquet of red roses can be delivered to anyone in San Francisco, CA, from Amy’s Flowers.” This gets the city and name of the flower store into the text.

The image filename is also important. Don’t simply name that image of the red roses as roses1.gif or something similar. Name it something a bit more descriptive like red-rose-bouquet-1. No, it may not seem that much different, but its actually does help.

The surrounding text of an image can also help Google learn what the image is about. Add captions below your images to give the search bots yet another line of text to read, and try to work in something about the image into the nearby text if possible.

Finally, Google will take a look at your overall page theme too. If you add some Google AdSense ads to your site, you’ll see exactly what Google thinks of your site, including its main focus and its location. If these ads don’t seem to fit with your services or products, it may be a sign that you need to re-evaluate your keywords.

A few other things relevant to images:

Google won’t count images done in slide shows or shown via any sort of script. Try to avoid using these if possible.

Put all of your images in one folder on your website, and don’t change that folder name. If you do, Google may not know where your images have moved to.

Don’t do optimization work on template images or on images you use as a background. These aren’t really useful to searchers, and there’s no point in doing work on them. Do the same for any images you use for buttons and other background items. Do, however, do SEO work on your company logo and on your banners since users may search for them.

Optimizing Google Adsense

Optimizing Google Adsense

So you want to make money with Google Adsense? I don’t blame you, who doesn’t want residual income! This article will show you how to better optimize Google Adsense to make more money from your web site(s)…
First and foremost is: Positioning
Where you position your Adsense link boxes and banner ads is extremely important. Trying to make money from the bottom of your pages within your website just won’t cut it. You need to add your Adsense links right in the heart of your template or right in the heart of your content. I would personally suggest both actually.

Adding Adsense in the heart of your template:
Link Units:
Since the introduction of Google Adsense “link units”, we can now add what looks like a “menu system” to compliment our menu system within our website. This is HUGE. Have you ever just clicked on a website and kept clicking on the menu links? I know we all have. By adding a “Google link units” to your menu, you will get more clicks than you thought possible. Try adding the link units near the top for better performance and try creating your link units to match the color of your menu system in place. Once in a while I find myself clicking on a menu link unit without even realizing it which in turn gives more money to the website owner.

Leaderboards & Skyscrapers:
These may very well be your “bread & butter”. I only say this because of the sheer size of these ads units. The best place to add these ad units is obvious; Straight across the very top of your website (leaderboards), and straight down the side of your template (skyscrapers). Anywhere else may not look proper within your template and may look unprofessional.
Square & Rectangle Ad Units:
These are great to compliment the mass amount of content within your website and also within your recommended resources. You want to compliment your content, you don’t want Adsense to BE your content because this will look poor on your part. Adsense is very popular with webmasters; who doesn’t want to make some extra money. However, don’t forget that many of your visitors are also used to seeing Adsense within a website, and need a good reason to click on them.

Square and rectangular units are great to use within articles posted on your website or within your link resources. Try adding your Adsense boxes above your resource links within a page to give your Adsense account that added extra exposure.
Just remember that Google allows up to 3 ad units per page. Using these 3 strategies will help to better optimize Adsense for positioning! Let’s now go onto targeting…
Optimizing Adsense: Taking out non-related ads!
Do you ever wonder how ads like “business card specials” ever get displayed on to your website when your company content is all about baby clothing? Since the introduction of “Adwords Site Targeting”, we now have to keep an eye on the ads being displayed on our website(s). Companies may now specifically target your website for more exposure. There is no restriction whether the website is content related or not, just more marketing exposure for the advertiser.

Filtering Adsense Advertisers:
Within your Adsense manager, you have the option of using the “Competition Filter” which allows us to remove certain websites from the ads being displayed regularly. This is going to be an on-going optimization task in the future. Without filtering the ads being displayed within your website, you might find yourself with ads unrelated to your industry and possibly some ads that have a negative effect within your site.
If you don’t remove all the unwanted ads being displayed on your website, you might end up hurting your Adsense performance online. The more targeted you can get your Google Adsense ads to display on each page, the better your chances at being able to make more money. Try to take a moment every week to study the ads being displayed on your website.

Open up a note pad, or word document and record all the websites you don’t want to be displayed anymore. Add these sites to your “filter list” within your Adsense account.
Remember to add the website (within your filter list) like so.Adding anything after or before the url will only prevent the company from displaying one of their many ads like so .This way you stop anything from the entire website from showing up within your Adsense campaign online. The more you optimize your Adsense filter, the better your performance will pick up and the less non-related ads will be displayed on your website.
