The Google Duplicate Content Penalty: the Truth

The Google Duplicate Content Penalty: the Truth

The truth of the Google duplicate content penalty is quite simply that there is none! If that confuses you, then you have been reading too many misinformed forums or blogs where people get stuck on some popular term that they have no idea what it means, and then profess to be experts.

The only experts on the Google duplicate content penalty, and the only people who are qualified to define it, are Google, and in Google’s own words “There is no such thing as a duplicate content penalty”. This comes directly from Google’s Webmaster Central Blog.

That should be the end of this article, at precisely 96 words excluding title as I define my word count. But it is not. Why? Because even though this blog is operated by Google, and even thought much the same has been stated by Matt Cutts, Google’s main software engineer, and other Google experts, people still argue and complain about the Google ‘duplicate content penalty’.

So here is the truth: you might ask who am I to know the truth, but I read all the Google blogs and their official statements, and in applying what I learn I achieve excellent results for my web pages on Google search engine listings: and those of Yahoo, MSN and Bing. So I am coming from a sound base that my results can prove.

As a professional article writer whose customers trust to get them the best results from the articles I write, I have to be very aware of the policies and the way the algorithms work of each of the major search engines, and so I am qualified as anybody to comment on myths such as this.

The Truth of the Google Duplicate Content Penalty

There is no duplicate content penalty. Google’s major search engine function is to offer a customer the best possible results for a search, based upon the search term (keywords) that the customer has used in the Google search box.

Google’s customers are not:

1. You, who use it to get your web pages listed.

2. Adwords advertisers that use Adwords to advertise their products.

3. Corporations or individuals that use it to have their web pages listed.

4. Internet marketers who recommend others to use Google for advertising or searching.

Google’s customers are those are seeking information, whether that is to solve a problem, where to purchase a product at the cheapest price, find a sports result or to get directions to a specific location. Everybody that uses Google uses a search term to find some information that they need. That search term is what you and I refer to as a keyword.

If Google detects several web pages offering exactly the same content, its algorithms will select that which best offers the information required and list that. It might also list one or two other pages offering exactly the same content if there are good reasons for it doing so (e.g. more links to other relevant websites, more other relevant pages on the domain, and so on).

So, not all duplicate content pages will be refused a listing. If these duplicates are articles, then the algorithms that the spiders carry on their backs will take the links from these articles into consideration, the authority of the directory on which it is published, and other factors, before deciding which should be listed. It is wrong to believe that this decision has a chronological factor, but, if you include a link in your article Resource section to your web page that contains the same article, then your page is liable to be listed above the others, partially because of a greater number of links back to it from the other copies, and partially because your entire site is liable to be more relevant than these others to information being sought by Google’s customer.

This is not because yours was created first, but because it better meets Google’s criterion for authoritative back-links. However, if the rest of your website is not equally authoritative, your page might be listed behind another with the same content or even not listed at all.

All of this is designed by Google so that its customer is offered the most relevant range of results to the keywords they used. That is what Google is for, and is its ultimate objective. Google will not penalize any individual or any website for publishing what you refer to as ‘duplicate content’, and it will take your version into consideration for publication just as any other version.

What counts in the long run is which version Google’s algorithms believe to be most likely to offer the best possible information to the person seeking it, and if that means not publishing a whole host of duplicate information, then that is only fair, isn’t it? If you used Google to find some information, you wouldn’t want to find page after page saying exactly the same thing, would you?

No, and neither does Google. A Google listing comes from its indexing of billions of web pages that contain the keywords used by the searcher: both in relation to the entire phrase and to the individual words used in the search term. If you want your copy to be different, make some minor changes and perhaps change the form of the keywords, but most importantly, change the title and the introductory paragraph to which the crawlers will take special notice.

You then have a better chance of your version being listed along with some of the others, but remember: the next time you use the term ‘duplicate content’ you are using a term that does not exist in Google’s vocabulary for any reason than to deny its existence. The Google Duplicate Content Penalty does not exist: the truth!

Google Adwords Content Network – Get the Most Out of It!

Google Adwords Content Network – Get the Most Out of It!

Google’s Content Network can be a very powerful tool in your gig bag of PPC Management success. By selecting a simple setting inside your campaign settings, you can literally reach millions of readers / potential customers that Google.com and Google’s Search Network simply doesn’t reach. Read on for PPC Optimization tips and potential hazards when it comes to the Content Network.

Campaign Organization: When setting up your campaigns there are a couple of ways to effectively organize them. One way is to have a single campaign that is enabled for both Google.com (and their search network if you so choose) and Google’s Content Network. When chosing this feature, make sure you select the option that give you control over the bids across both networks. My preferred method is to set up separate campaigns … one is for Google’s Search Network (AOL, Earthlink, Dogpile) and one is for Google’s Content Network. This will allow you to better control the daily / monthly spend since you can only set budget caps at the Campaign Level.

Ad Groups Inside Your Content Network Campaigns. Don’t worry about duplicate keyword issues with the keywords inside your Content Network Ad Groups. Google decides where to show your ads across their Content Network based on the Ad Group relevancy as a whole. This includes both keywords and ad copy. So, remember it this way … Google’s Content Network is NOT keyword driven – it’s relevancy driven. After all, when you see ads on another site that are Sponsored Listings from Google Adsense, you didn’t have to type in a keyword to display those ads.

Laser Target Your Content Network Ad Groups. When adding keywords in your Content Network ad groups, keep the list short and Laser Focused! Remember, Google decides where to show your ads based on the Ad Group relevancy … not based on each keyword. For example, if your business is generating leads for colleges and schools providing nursing degrees, then it makes sense to have an Ad Group in your Search Network campaigns targeting keywords such as “nursing jobs” or “nurse salary”. But, for the Content Network, those keywords should not be in your Ad Group because this give Google the option to show your ads on medical job boards, resume writing sites and other non relevant sites. For the Content Network Ad Groups it’s best to keep your keywords laser focused – in Exact Match format – targeting your specific niche … like [nursing degree] [nursing degrees] [nursing school] [nursing schools] [cna degree] etc.

Placement Reports. Closely monitor your Content Network performance by pulling Placement Reports from Google’s Reporting tool. When you receive enough data to start crunching useful stats, find the Domains that are driving quality / converting traffic to your site.

Site Match Campaigns. Set up Site Match campaigns targeting the converting Domains you identified in your Reports and allocate your budgets accordingly. (Don’t forget to add these domains to your Excluded Domain list for your Content Network Campaigns). Here’s a tip – when analyzing your reports to determine which sites you want to add to your Site Match campaign, calculate your Avg. Cost p/ Impression for that site to start off your Site Match CPM Bid. After you start receiving conversion / sales data from each domain you can then dial in your CPM Bids to achieve your CPA (Cost Per Acquisition) target.

Why You Need to Optimize Your SEO Content for More Than Just Google

Why You Need to Optimize Your SEO Content for More Than Just Google

If you simply optimize your website SEO for Google, you could be missing out on a huge untapped number of potential visitors to your website. Although it’s true that Google is the leading search engine and accounts for over 70% of all search-related traffic, that doesn’t mean that you should start and end your website SEO at Google.

While there’s no denying the results and traffic that a professionally SEO-enhanced website will bring you, and that Google plays a large part of that, take the time to think about these figures. Sure, Google accounts for 70% of all search engine traffic – yet that leaves 30% unacounted for.

According to the latest figures from Internet World Stats, there are currently 1,458,632,361 Internet users around the world today. An incredible figure, and one that’s growing all the time. Now, take Google out of the equation and you’re left with 437,589,703 users – almost half a billion! Let’s say that only 20% of these users are business browsers – that’s still an incredible 87.5 million users.

Can your business afford to miss out on these web users simply because you’re concentrating on optimizing your website for Google? If you’re like the vast majority of businesses who can’t afford to miss out on this untapped goldmine, there are ways that you can ensure you have the best possible chance of capturing that untapped audience:

Use an expert content provider in SEO that can write for the different search engines

Purchase international domain names for your website – the Asian market in particular is about to explode and the international URL’s will help you in this market and others

Depending on the size of your company, set up localized blogs. Outsource writers if you need to – the extra cost will be worth it

Understand how the different search engines rank content and tailor different pages on your website for different search engines

Losing business through tougher trading or economical reasons is bad enough – losing business through easy-to-remedy optimization of your website’s content is worse. Making sure your SEO is truly search engine friendly is achievable and the best starting point is providing SEO content that is friends with more than just Google.

Explode Your Google Adsense and Affiliate Commissions Through Niche Blog Content Sites

Explode Your Google Adsense and Affiliate Commissions Through Niche Blog Content Sites

Content as we know it is the Life-Blood or FUEL, if you will, of the Internet.

That was and still is the Internets sole purpose, except only now it’s commercialized, giving the online entrepreneur the world at their fingers tips.

And the facts are that usually when people first come online it’s not to go purchase something, it’s to look for Information that will answer a question they might have about a particular product they’re interested in and/or to a problem they are dealing with and are searching for a solution.

Ask yourself this, “Why do I go online?”

Does it resemble anything like what I just stated?

Only you can answer that.

These are simply the facts with out a doubt… Period!

Now that you have an idea of WHY people come online, I’m now going to explain to you how you can…

“Explode Your Google Adsense and Affiliate Commissions Through Niche Blog Content Sites”

Did you notice the last two words within the quotations?

That’s right, Content Sites.

What are Content Sites?

I think it’s pretty self explanatory but the basic definition of a Content Site is this – it’s a site that contains targeted content that targets a particular niche or many niches.(niche examples: cars, fitness, hobbies, etc.)

Not quite up to speed on what a blog is, here’s a quick definition of a blog – a blog(A.K.A. Web-Log) is simply a place to go and post your personal thoughts that you can share with your subscribers and/or readership and receive feedback.

Now that you know the basic definitions of a Content Site and a Blog lets continue.

Content Sites can contain Hundreds-to-Thousands of pages of keyword rich content, which by the way is exactly what the Search Engines love and will come back for if New content is added on a frequent basis giving the owner of that site lots of opportunity to benefit from the Free traffic inwhich the content pages, or what I like to call Feeder Pages, generate.

So, now that you have an idea of what a Content Site and a Blog is it’s now time to tell you how you can build your own Niche Blog Content Site Empire, no matter what your niche is, using Blogs, Google Adsense and ClickBank affiliate products.

Bare in mind that the steps outlined below are only going to be a summarization of the actual process involved.

So, with that said, here it is.

Step #1. Set up a Blog.

The first step is quite simple. All you have to do is set up a Blog either through…

Blogger.com – http://www.blogger.com

or…

Wordpress.org – http://www.wordpress.org

This blog your setting up is going to be the foundation of your Niche Blog Content Site and is where the rest of the pieces of the puzzle are going to be added to once you’ve set it up.

(Quick Tip: Make sure you use your Target Keywords within your URL of your niche blog and in the Title and Description. VERY Important!)

Once you have your niche blog set up move on to Step #2.

Step #2. Adding your Google Adsense code.

Depending on your experience with scripting and html, it’s now time to add your Google Adsense code to your new niche blog in 3 strategic places.

Google allows you to add 3 Google Adsense blocks only to one page, no more than that, so I recommend one at the Top, one in the Right or Left sidebar depending on the template you choose and one at the Bottom of your blog.

By doing this your almost forcing your reader to click on a link within the Google Adsense block, which is of course, is exactly what you want and where your going to make the money.

The other great thing about Google Adsense is the ads are targeted to the content that you post, giving the reader even more reason to click through.

Here’s a few resources for you that will show you how to add the Google Adsense code to your blog using the services I mentioned above if your not sure how to yourself.

Blogger.com: http://help.blogger.com/bin/answer.py?answer=964

Wordpress.org: http://www.acmetech.com/blog/adsense-deluxe/

Simply follow the instructions and you’ll have Google Adsense installed on your niche blog in no time.

Step #3. Find a related ClickBank product.

Now it’s time to go shopping at ClickBank.com – http://www.clickbank.com – for a related information product that targets your niche.

Once there click on the link Earn Commissions at the bottom.

This will bring to to their directory where you’ll find many products to choose from that will target any niche your blog is about.

(Quick Tip: The first 10 listed under each category are the TOP converting programs, meaning… their the ones making the most money.)

If you don’t have a ClickBank.com nickname you’ll have to sign up for one. It’ll only take you a few minutes.

From there, once you’ve chosen a program to join your going to want to collect all the affiliate materials available, like Articles, Banners, Text Links, etc., because your going to place these on your NEW niche blog site with your affiliate link linked to them so when your reader clicks on them and decides to buy the related information, you get the commission.

Well… there you have it, 3 steps to “Explode Your Google Adsense and Affiliate Commissions Through Niche Blog Content Sites”.

Now the only thing left for you to do is to start building an audience by promoting your Blog.

Here’s a few resources for you to get started with.

The Real-Time Content

The Real-Time Content

After a brief purgatory linked to the explosion of the Internet bubble in early 2000, came the time for web 2.0. Wikipedia, MySpace, YouTube, Dailymotion, Facebook …

With these new sites acclaimed by the Internet, a new dimension, a stowaway was invited without being noticed: the weather.Essential component of our life and social activities, the time is now present on the Internet and fundamentally changes the purpose of consumption.

Creating a blog automatically causes the release date and an associated archive. Can not cheat the pace of publication must be submitted under penalty of seeing his blog look like a fallow funded by Europe. Gradually users find the discipline to which the media are subjected and which reflect their vocabulary; Journal of 13h or 20h, morning, chronic daily, weekly or monthly.

The RSS gradually impose their rhythm in the world of web and new search engines dedicated to appear blogs, Technorati and Google Blog Search, with features filter dates.
Meanwhile companies timid wonder, does should be blogging and if so who has the right to blog. Some still think, some tentatively trying adventure.Too late…

“The time for blogging was probably too slow for the current digital revolution, a new trend is emerging: the actual time (real-time Web) popularized by Twitter. With Twitter, the Web is like New York,he never sleeps (sic)!
In “real life”, the company is familiar time, invoice 90 days, to meet the deadline of tender, payment of wages, yield management are all vital functions of the company .. Innovate before other produce as quickly as possible, respecting timing of project, program the launch of a product, publication of the balance sheet, dealing with annual rates of consumption reflect the business’ ability to articulate its business around time constraints.
Yet on the web, it is the users who have become masters of time.

Automakers up with users who take their spyshots camouflaged prototype crossed the detour route unlikely. Rumors of new products inflame fansboys who do not hesitate to blow photoshop to offer their visions of “fakes”.

Products sold are not already commented on Amazon, as Seven of Microsoft or the chronology of an event is not always identical between sites, and the death of Michael Jackson was announced on Twitter when traditional media relations only after hospitalization a heart attack.

The real time is nevertheless a great asset to the company, first to take the air time, the famous popularized by Google Zeitgeist (www.google.com / zeitgeist).Listening to the consumer while what is said in real time on its products is available at the company.

To take advantage of it as Twitter, blogs, reviews, recommendations, provide the perfect place to detect future trends and assess the relationship to the consumer with the brand.
Certainly we must not confuse speed with haste, and under the pretext of following the fashion open a “chirping” (tweet) without thoughtful strategy but include this new dimension of real time in its overall web strategy.

The Tricky Issue Of Duplicate Content & What Google Says About It

Copyright (c) 2009 Titus Hoskins

Being a full-time online marketer means you have to keep a close watch on how Google is ranking pages on the web… one very serious concern is the whole issue of duplicate content. More importantly, how does having duplicate content on your own site and on other people’s sites, affect your keyword rankings in Google and the other search engines?

Now, recently it seems that Google is much more open about just how it ranks content. I say “seems” because with Google there are years and years of mistrust when it comes to how they treat content and webmasters. Google’s whole “do as I say” attitude leaves a bitter taste in most webmasters’ mouths. So much so, that many have had more than enough of Google’s attitude and ignore what Google and their pundits say altogether.

This is probably very emotionally fulfilling, but is it the right route or attitude to take? Probably not!

Mainly because, regardless of whether you love or hate Google, there’s no denying they are King of online search and you must play by their rules or leave a lot of serious online revenue on the table. Now, for my major keyword content/pages even a loss of just a few places in the rankings can mean I lose hundreds of dollars in daily commissions, so anything affecting my rankings obviously get my immediate attention.

So the whole tricky issue of duplicate content has caused me some concern and I have made an ongoing mental note to myself to find out everything I can about it. I am mainly worried about my content being ranked lower because the search engines think it is duplicate content and penalizes it.

My situation is compounded by the fact that I am heavily into article marketing – the same articles are featured on hundreds, some times thousands of sites across the web. Naturally, I am worried these articles will dilute or lower my rankings rather than accomplish their intended purpose of getting higher rankings.

I try to vary the anchor text/keyword link in the resource boxes of these articles. I don’t use the same keyword phrase over and over again, as I am nearly 99% positive Google has a “keyword use” quota – repeat the same keyword phrase too often and your highly linked content will be lowered around 50 or 60 places, basically taking it out of the search results. Been there, done that!

I even like submitting unique articles to certain popular sites so only that site has the article, thus eliminating the whole duplicate content issue. This also makes for a great SEO strategy, especially for beginning online marketers, your own site will take some time to get to a PR6 or PR7, but you can place your content and links on high PR7 or PR8 authority sites immediately. This will bring in quality traffic and help your own site get established.

Another way I combat this issue is by using a 301 re-direct so that traffic and pagerank flows to the URL I want ranked. You can also use your Google Webmaster Tool account to show which version of your site you want ranked or featured: with or without the www.

The whole reason for doing any of this has to do with PageRank juice – you want to pass along this ranking juice to the appropriate page or content. This can raise your rankings, especially in Google.

Thankfully, there is the relatively new “canonical tag” you can use to tell the search engines this is the page/content you want featured or ranked. Just add this meta link tag to your content which you want ranked or featured, as in the example given below:

link rel=”canonical” rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview(‘/outgoing/article_exit_link’);” href=”place your preferred link here”

Anyway, this whole duplicate issue has many faces and sides, so I like going directly to Google for my information. Experience has shown me that Google doesn’t always give you the full monty, but for the most part, you can follow what they say. Lately, over the last year or so, Google seems to have made a major policy change and are telling webmasters a lot more information on how they (Google) rank their index.

So if you’re concerned or interested in finding out more about duplicate content and what Google says about it try these helpful links. First one is a very informative video on the subject entitled “Duplicate Content & Multiple Site Issues” which is presented by Greg Grothaus who works for Google.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hSoXutuj0g

Another great link is this page from Google Webmasters Support Answers by Matt Cutts. It has a lot of helpful information, including a video on the Canonical Link Element. It’s located here:

http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=139394

In yet another post, Matt Cutts discusses the related issue of content scraping and advises webmasters not to worry about it. This is a slightly different matter, other webmasters and unmentionables may use software to scrape your site and place your content on their site. This has happened to me, countless times, including when my content has been reduced to scrambled nonsense. Cutts says not to worry about this matter as Google can usually tell the original source of the material. In fact, having links in this duplicate content may just help your rankings in Google.

“There are some people who really hate scrapers and try to crack down on them and try to get every single one deleted or kicked off their web host,” says Cutts. “I tend to be the sort of person who doesn’t really worry about it, because the vast, vast, vast majority of the time, it’s going to be you that comes up, not the scraper. If the guy is scraping and scrapes the content that has a link to you, he’s linking to you, so worst case, it won’t hurt, but in some weird cases, it might actually help a little bit.”

As a full-time online marketer I am not so easily convinced, I mainly have pressing concerns about my unscrupulous competition using these scrapings and duplicate content to undermine one’s rankings in Google by triggering some keyword spam filter. Whether in fact this actually happens, only Google knows for sure, but it is just another indication, despite the very detailed and helpful information given above, duplicate content and the issues surrounding it, will still present serious concerns for online marketers and webmasters in the future.

Google Adsense Help on Improving Your Site Content

Many people seek information on attaining decent “pr” (page rank) with Google. They usually start somewhere when they begin and usually it’s a pretty simple web page with a Google ad. If they are insistent upon reaching success with Google Adsense that page will turn into something bigger. Usually when someone wants to achieve success they do not want to cut corners. They need to be ambitious and continue to look for a niche. Premade Google Adsense pages usually come with some sort of news feed in RSS and they usually have other auto update features. I don’t really like this idea for auto content. for more detail go to:www.thegoogleincome.com.Automated content is not as effective as people would like you to believe. The reason why is because usually your own auto content feeder is set to update content that is relative to your site. Well every single webmaster that runs a site that has the same content and feeder settings are nearly duplicating your site by coincidence.
Rich fresh content is the ultimate key. I stress this repeatedly throughout all of my Google articles and let me say that it is important. Do not copy content from other websites! Now don’t worry. You won’t likely get sued for it. It will just keep you from standing out in the search results. And standing out is exactly what you are attempting to achieve! In the short “how to” paragraph below I will explain how to “stay fresh” on the web. I will update this article when my free ebook is finished to allow you to download more information and help on improving your site content and helping you deliver fresher content more often.
A Few Simple Steps to Achieving Fresh Content Daily For Free! First make sure you are not doing the following. I am not copying content from other websites to get fresh content daily.
This is important. Fresh content is your own content! You can NOT get fresh content when you are getting it from another online source. This is a misleading scam that many websites use to get people to subscribe via RSS or to copy and paste snippets of code to increase their pr by having their content on so many other people’s websites. I am not falling for software offers that promise fresh content daily via PHP script. These can be useful in providing stickiness but should not be used as a fresh content daily strategy that you turn on and walk away from. These tools should be used only in addition to your own daily fresh content inserts into your page source. I am not displaying more ads than content!
This one surely doesn’t get enough attention! People can tell if you are straining for content when your page is more than 60% ads and 40% or less is decent alluring content. For more help visit to: www.yourgoogleincome.com.Be original and at least attempt to balance out your content so that your pages are unique and can get more people bookmarking them. Nowadays people bookmark pages in so many ways like “Dig” and “Face book” and so many others including “Stumble” and the classic browser bookmarks. These are pr building bookmarks! They work well to build your page rank and are considered Backlinks!
Begin Building Fresh Adsense Pages That Are Rich and Fresh In Content! First you need a niche topic that is really hot! Like maybe a page on celebrities for example. If you watch a lot of television you could keep up to date on this by checking out the Entertainment News channels. Sure its old news by the time it hits your page but the point is it’s written in your own words and you are going to update this daily. This will become your sole duty when online everyday. Always check the top headlines on all of the news channels that cover Entertainment so that you will be quick to jot the new facts down.

Should Original Content Get Higher Rankings in Google?

In late February, Google made some changes to it’s algorithm, which was rumoured to assist Big Brands in achieving search rankings. Of course Google denied this vehemently, saying their algorithm doesn’t even consider brand, and that instead it is still largely based on trust, authority, reputation, high quality and page rank.

In late March, Search Engine Land and AdAge reported on a coalition of big brands (The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Time Inc, Hearst, ESPN), who want Google to go further and actually explicitly help out with their rankings.

All the above brands are members of the Google Publishers network, and as such, may expect to have some clout with Google. One of their main gripes is that they resent the components of Google’s algorithm, for example, Page Rank, as they think this criteria enables “parasites off the true producers of content” to benefit disproportionately.

The report by AdAge describes an example that these publishers used – When typing in Gaza into Google, they were unhappy that Wikipedia entries, BBC articles, The CIA Factbook entry on Gaza, a Twitter entry (bizarre) and a YouTube video ranked ahead of a Times news story on the conflict.

They were also outraged that all these results were presented in an identical manner, so that their brand could not easily be identified. Although complaining about the uniform presentation of results and the Google algorithm, (both of which aim to show no preference other than ‘relevance’ to a query), seems to be immature and displaying a lack of knowledge about the point of a search engine, the very basis of their complaint did not seem unreasonable to me. That is, that they think the original publishers of content should be rewarded for publishing it.

However, this then becomes an argument between the relative value of original and derivative content. Of course original content is necessary, because independent bloggers don’t necessarily have the clout and budget to have reporters everywhere (or even anywhere sometimes). However, derivative content often has a lot of added value which might mean that searchers prefer it to the original content. For example:

* A derivative article might summarise and link to an original article, making it more digestible.
* It often has differing perspectives, and could be seen as more impartial, when not associated with a big brand or politically friendly publisher.
* Writers of derivative content have more time to consider arguments, positions and facts due to the fact that they aren’t fighting to a deadline, so have the advantage of timely consideration.
* They are more likely able to link to many other published pieces on the subject and be an all in one resource (for example, Wikipedia).
* Derivative articles often offer interaction, allowing comments and participation.

If Google does try to continue to develop their algorithm so that original content is given a bit more help (which of course is what they are doing), that is fine, as long as it also continues to value other aspects like those listed above, that searchers also like to view.

These Big Brands could also help themselves somewhat, by doing some more SEO for their sites. One of the publishers listed in the Ad Age article acknowledged this through the following comment:

“They don’t owe us that we show up a particular way. They do publish a whole lot about how to make your site show up as much as possible. If people haven’t taken action on it, that’s their own damn fault.”

Law Firm SEO – Is Your Content Being Indexed By Google?

Law Firm Search Engine Optimization or “SEO” for short is all about optimizing your website for selected keywords such that it appears high on Google pages when users enter in those keywords.

I’ve been visiting some great websites that deal with SEO in general and I wanted to share some thoughts and resources.

You’ve heard it before, but it’s worth repeating: content is king. The more high quality content you have, the more that search engines will index your pages higher on their rankings. This is because other websites will likely link to your content (because of its authoritativeness) and the more links you have, the better. Also, search engines likely regularly updated content (it treats it as more relevant than static pages).

So the first step is to find out how much content search engines actually see. This is easy. Just go to Google and type in the following: site: url. The search engines will display all of the pages they’ve indexed from your site.

Interestingly, Google’s spider (i.e. the bot that crawls the web and indexes pages) is faster and more efficient than the Yahoo spider (called slurp). No one is really sure why this is the case, but many people have complained that Yahoo is very slow at indexing website pages. The only explanation that people on the Internet keep saying is: be patient, wait, and eventually yahoo will index your website.

Another tool you can use to determine how Google (and likely other search engines) rank your page is to visit Google PageRank (http://www.prchecker.info/check_page_rank.php). Just go to the website and type in your url (e.g. http://www.canada.com). Within a matter of seconds, Google Page Rank will return a number out of 10 that gives you insight into how well ranked your website is on Google. Most websites are ranked 0,1, or 2. You should keep coming back to this tool to see if your law firm search engine optimization techniques, strategies, and perhaps vendors are improving your search engine results.
