Basic Elements of Search Engine Optimization

Basic Elements of Search Engine Optimization

In this article I will attempt to explain in the very simplest terms, what Search Engine Optimization is, and why it is important.

First of all, it is never a good idea to just go out and put up a website, without giving any thought to Search Engine Optimization. A website conceived and created this way is destined to fail! The reason why I can tell you this, is because I’ve done it before. And this was a very hard lesson learned from firsthand experience!

Search Engine Optimization – or SEO – is a scientific way of saying that your site is optimized. The word optimization implies a process or a procedure you might follow to optimize your site.

Simply put, this means setting your site up in a way that will make the search engines love it.

Think about this: Statistics say that probably 90% of those who are seeking information, products or services online use some search engine to find what they are looking for. Examples include: Google, Yahoo, MSN and Alexa. So that leads me to the next logical conclusion: when the search results are displayed, there are sometimes hundreds of thousands of results listed. But, the average person is not going to go through all of those listings. I personally don’t look past the 3rd page of a result. Instead, I do another search using a different keyword. And that is in all likelihood what every consumer does. I’m looking at the very first few listings to show me what I’m looking for. The implication is that if your site is not in those top listings that show up on the first page of the search engine results, it is highly probable that you site will never be visible to those who are looking for your information – no matter how great your site is, nobody will be able to find you. So, the key to optimizing your website is to think about what your customers will be searching for, and to fine-tune your website and align it with those search words.

If the search engines love your website, it will be more visible, and rank higher in the search results

listings naturally – meaning that you don’t have to pay to advertise your website in order for it to rank high in search. Your website’s pages will be so well put together until they will naturally be listed at or near the top of the search results just because they are so well-put together and relevant – optimized. This is the way your website becomes visible to the viewing public.

SEO is a big word today in website development. People who use their websites to sell products and services, really work hard to optimize every single page of their website so that it will be search engine optimized and rank high in the search results.

Of all the major search engines, Google, pretty much sets the standard for Search Engine Optimization.

What is Google Looking For in an Optimized Website?

First of all, when you decide to build a website, you do so with a particular purpose in mind. Are you selling a product? Are you promoting a service? Okay, then what you want to do is to think about what keywords the average person would use if they were looking for information you are promoting on your website. You have to be very very specific. Jot those keywords down somewhere handy. Choose some keywords and phrases with pin-point accuracy that clearly and precisely describe what your website is about.

As you are writing and building content for your website, make sure you use those keywords and phrases throughout the pages. Concentrate on your keywords and phrases. BUT, by the same token – you can’t get carried away and overdo it. Because Google will not like you for that either!

Now, you also want to make sure that your site name is related to your keywords – better if your site name contains the keyword itself.

Next you want to focus on your page titles. Always try to include your main keyword in the title of each page of your site.

Many experts also insist that your sub-headings contain either your main keywords or keyword phrases arranged differently.

At the present time, there is still a lot of disagreement among web-masters as to the importance of including keywords in your meta-data.

Okay, what’s meta-data you ask?

Meta-data is the information that you usually enter somewhere in your site’s internal structure that summarizes what the site is about: You are asked to supply the site’s title, a very short description of what the site is about, and finally a list of your main keywords related to your site.

Some web-masters say that Google does not really pay any attention to this information any more, under their new ranking system, while others say yes. So, to be on the safe side, I would include meta data on my website.

The important thing to know is that Google – the biggest search engine of all – has something called an algorithm — some mathematical formula – it’s supposedly a well-kept secret. But, it uses this algorithm to decide on which sites to rank higher than others in the search results.

This is why search engine optimization is key factor in determining page rank.

If you have a website, go back now, and review your site, and see where you can optimize it. Look at your domain name, your site title, your page titles, subtitles, and meta tags, and make sure that each of these is relevant for the product or service that you are selling, and you’ll be fine.

Basic tips on optimizing for Google

Basic tips on optimizing for Google

So without further ado, let’s get into the tips:

First and foremost, build links. This was what put Google in the position they’re in today – they realised that the most reliable way to judge a site isn’t by what’s on it – that’s open to manipulation, the best way to judge a site is by how many independent websites link to it, what’s on those websites and what keywords they chose to link with – This system is called PageRank. There are many tactics for building links and how you do it will depend on your site, but a good start is to set up some links to complementary (not competing) websites and see if you can get them to link back to you. Building links is great for Google, but it’s also great for gaining traffic from the links themselves. Produce some content – if you offer a service, write some articles related to the service you’re providing (you can see this technique in action on this very page). This gives you the opportunity to create lots of pages for Google to index and fill them with keywords relevant to your site. Write things that are useful or interesting that might encourage others to link to you. Put links to other websites in your content where appropriate, see if you can build link networks with other content providers. Use CSS to order your HTML files so that the content comes at the beginning of the file, before any menus, navbars or adverts – even if this is not the way it should appear on the page. The first thing in your HTML file should be a heading, followed by the actual content, and then after that should come any menus or navigational elements, and after that any adverts. Google does not render your pages, so if your menu comes before your content, Google will assume that your menu is more important than your content. It’s relatively easy to use CSS to override the order of the HTML file and position each element exactly where you want it irrespective of where it is in the HTML file. Determine the keywords that your customers are likely to put into a search engine and use them a few times throughout each of the relevant pages on your site. The higher up your page the better, this includes the page title and the address bar. The most important places you can put keywords are the page title, the URL and the first heading (hint, use h1 tags). If you have articles with different titles, use the title of the article in the title tag – don’t just use the same title for every page. You can get keyword ideas using one of the online keyword suggestion tools, Google’s is here, Yahoo (Overture’s) is here. You could also try these keyword tools from third party providers (although they mostly rely on the data from Google and Overture, they often display it in a more helpful way). SeoBook, WordTracker or KeywordDiscovery. If there is one specific keyword or phrase that’s particularly relevant you may try registering it as a domain name. For example at Digital Crocus we would love to get our hands on webhosting.com, web-hosting.com, virtual-private-servers.com or something similar; unfortunately for us none of these domains are available, but they may be for you. Google will usually rank you higher in keyword searches if the keyword actually appears in your domain name. Consider registering your domain for more than the minimum number of years – this shows that your site is here to stay. Some spammers and scammers will register many different domain names for the minimum period possible and once their domain is blocked or banned they allow it to expire and move onto a new one. Registering your domain for longer is an easy way to indicate to Google that you’re serious about your website and it could well gain you a few easy points in the search engine rankings. Make your URLs search engine friendly; if you use a database driven website your pages may have URLs like this: http://yourdomain.com/directory/phpscript.php?section=962452&page=662342. This may be the easiest way to reference the ID numbers of rows in your database, but it doesn’t exactly contain many keywords. Not only that, but there’s a risk Google may think that your PHP script is part of an interactive web application rather than a page displaying content and only index a limited number of the pages, or worse, not index it at all. The Digital Crocus knowledgebase is a database driven system, but notice how the URLs all contain the title of the article – the ID numbers are there too at the beginning of the file name but it’s a lot friendlier than the example above. We achieve this effect using mod_rewrite although this can be a bit scary for the novice user. If you run an out-of-the-box software solution on your website, you may find that there is a plugin for friendly URLs – this is particularly true of blogging software. Consult your specific system’s documentation and plugin list for further details. If you run a blog, try to build a network of links with other bloggers – many blogs have links to their friends’ blogs on their navigation bars. Add a similar list to your blog and see if you can get your friends to link to your blog from theirs. If you don’t run a blog, consider starting one – blogs don’t have to be personal diaries, you could use your blog to chart your company’s successes or new research projects, or you could use your blog to post links to any interesting things you find on the web related to your business. If you can create something that’s an interesting or useful read for your prospective customers, you should have no trouble building links – and that’s what it’s all about. Each time you add an article on your website, mention it in your blog and link to it using good keywords (hint, use the keyword tools mentioned previously). Try to build deep links to the content pages on your site, both from your own blog, front page and from external websites. The links should ideally be good keywords (use the keyword tools) relating to the article, rather than the name of your business as this ties the keywords and your individual articles together in Google’s map of the web. Determine a few of the most important keywords to your business (hint: pick the ones that have a high search volume according to the keyword tools mentioned above), and check regularly to see if your site appears on the search results. Even if it’s not on the first page of results, is it on the second or third pages? Look at the results that come above yours and ask yourself what they might be doing differently. Keep a record of the changes you make and the impact they have on your search position so you tell whether you’re heading in the right direction. Check that all of your pages are being indexed by Google. A quick way to do this is to pick a small section of text from each page and search for it with quotes (“”) around it. Do this for each page on your site that you would like to be indexed by Google so that you can determine if there are any pages that are not being indexed. Be aware that it can take Google a few days to get around to indexing new content. There may be a number of reasons why Google doesn’t index your pages; check whether you have to submit a form in order to access some of your content (Google never submits forms), check your URLs to see if they look like like static pages or dynamic applications – if all your pages are produced from a single dynamic script; Google may only index a limited number of the pages – see the point on optimising URLs for Google above. Ensure that each page has at least one link to it from somewhere else on your site – Google indexes your site by following links. Consider using Google’s webmaster tools to gain further information about how Google indexes your site.  You may also consider creating a Google sitemap – this is a special file that tells Google exactly which pages you would like it to index – see the webmaster tools for further details. Depending on how your site is laid out it may be worth creating a single page with a list of every other page on your site and a link to it – this is a sitemap in the non-Google sense of the term. You may choose to lay this out like a tree (mimicking the way the links are actually built on your site), or you may choose to lay it out as a simple A-Z index. This can help your customers navigate around quickly but it’s also good for search engines as it will ensure that there is a quick way to link through to every single page.

So that’s it for now – this should give you a good idea where to start but you will need to keep monitoring your success and making changes and additions to your website in order to stay ahead of the game – the popular search engines are constantly changing and updating their algorithms to improve the quality of their search results and this means that if you’re in the top position one day, you may not be the there the next day. Depending on the competition in your business sector it can be hard work keeping your site in the top spot, but the rewards can be huge as it costs time, not money to get your site to the top, and once it’s there, the potential to generate traffic is huge.

Good luck!

A Basic Rule Applies to Maximizing Your Twitter Experience

A Basic Rule Applies to Maximizing Your Twitter Experience

OK. The title of this article may be a bit tongue in cheek, since I am a tremendous advocate of Twitter but if you don’t use it correctly, well, it can be just a waste of time.

What Do I Mean?

Twitter is now one of the most popular, or possibly the most popular, social networking website on the internet. Millions of people ‘tweet’ each and every day. If all you want is to find out what strangers are doing on almost a minute by minute basis, that’s fine. But if you ask me, and I know you haven’t, that a waste of time.

What you really need to do is figure out ‘the why’ about your use of Twitter. For many people today the only reason to use Twitter is to promote their online or ‘brick and mortar’ business.

Having thousands if not hundreds of thousands of Followers can be a real head trip but for the most part that is all it is. There is no chance that a majority, or even a small percentage, of these people have any real interest in what you’re tweeting. Locating targeted followers is critical when working with Twitter. There are numerous tools that can hep you find just such a targeted Twitter audience.

If you are marketing to a world wide audience Twitter is an excellent resource. However, just any audience can still be a waste of time. As mentioned, most businesses have a particular target market or audience. If that is the case with your business you need to target your Twitter market in much the same way you would target market to a live audience.

If you have a ‘brick and mortar’ business and have a world wide audience, than the same rules about targeting may still apply. However, if your business, both online or ‘brick and mortar’ is local, than reaching a world wide audience is most likely a waste of time.

If your business is ‘local’ than targeting a ‘local’ audience is what you want and need. Fortunately, there are also several online tools that can help you find local ‘Twitterers’ who may be a match for your business. Geographic targeting is very important if you plan on maximizing your Twitter experience especially if your business target market lies within a specific geographic region.

In conclusion, Twitter is by far one of the most powerful tools we have to promote our businesses online. If you have a whole bunch of time and have a tremendous desire to know what food someone on the other side of the world is eating at that very moment, than…..well, just Twitter away.

Most people, however, are now looking to use Twitter to help promote their online or ‘brick and mortar’ business. Using generalized targeting along with geographic targeting can make a tremendous difference in your success or your time on Twitter being a ‘waste of time’.

Simple Basic Twitter Marketing Strategies You Can Apply Immediately

Simple Basic Twitter Marketing Strategies You Can Apply Immediately

Twitter has become part of our social routine to update, share information and use as a tool to announce an idea, opinion, thought, experience, share news and to open up, giving the receiver the chance to join into the ‘conversation’. So, it is an effective way to get a stream of traffic to your primary online business, but you need to tweet the right marketing strategy.

Searching through the Twitter search allows you to find ‘niche’ prospects by keywords which are related and you can follow. Tweeting about specific topics and exchanging thoughts also closes the gap between you and your prospect. But pitching too early in any social media arena, even in Facebook can turn people off quickly, so you need to establish the right identity first.

Be transparent when you introduce yourself, share your personal thoughts, opinions, goals and life aspirations. When you open up to others and say who you really are, people begin to let their guard down and connect with you on a personal level. It is due to human nature that we truly connect with an inner person, not just their facade. It is about your personal branding and social personality that will link you to others.

Tweet funny moments during your day or perhaps share a joke with others, after all humor is a great way to break the ice. Tweet a contagious Youtube video and start a conversation perhaps. Twitter is also a place where people ‘lounge and relax’, not a place where everything is all about being professional. So, feel free to tweet what you think is crazy.

Posting powerful quotes is another great way to project the ‘thinker’ in you. It sets a positive image and portrays you as a ‘leader’ which will motivates others to follow you. Quotes could be written by famous figures or you can write your own quotes that you truly believe in.

Be charming when you deal with people. Treat them the same way you would want them to treat you. Being polite goes a long way towards establishing a good connection with people.

Also, do not be afraid to express your views and let others see the way you are, but do so diplomatically. After all, keeping an open mind by letting others know there is an alternative point of view, may in fact, win more people over to your way of thinking.

Finally, whatever you do, never be pushy to your prospect. The more you ‘push’, the more they will be pushed away. Be interested and curious in what others say. Engage them in a circle of conversation. Listening is also golden. By listening you will better understand and develop a greater insight into your prospect.

Using Twitter as a tool to draw in your prospect and market your primary online business should be fun and effective. What’s more, it is free and easy to meet new people this way, not to mention, be ethical and practical.

Here’s tweeting to your success!

“SPAM your followers and you will lose them!”

Basic Organic Search Engine Optimization Defined

Basic Organic Search Engine Optimization Defined

There is a lot of talk nowadays about Search Engine Optimization, but not so much about Organic Search Engine Optimization itself. So what exactly is Organic Search Engine Optimization?

Organic Search Engine Optimization is just like ordinary Search Engine Optimization in that it is the process of optimizing the design of your website so that search results using keywords in search engines will rank your website higher in the non-paid listings. Organic Search Engine Optimization (also called Natural Search Engine Optimization) however, also has a slight difference from ordinary Search Engine Optimization in certain aspects but the main focus is to work towards getting the best ranking in Natural or Organic search results (SERPs).

For instance, Organic Search Engine Optimization requires your SEO team to evaluate your website thoroughly to see how best to optimize your website’s potential. The SEO team will then try to identify any technical issues which can bar your site from being indexed properly during the Organic Search Engine Optimization process.

Organic Search Engine Optimization also requires detailed keyword analysis to be done so your Organic Search Engine Optimization team can produce a list of appropriate keywords and phrases that can be used for your website. Keyword analysis should require real information about the function, products and services offered at your website, stay aligned with your goals for marketing your website, and try to get the best Organic Search Engine Optimization impact on the search engines and end users. Some Organic Search Engine Optimization specialists will give you a list of target keywords and phrases that have been ranked as to how popularly use each is by Internet searchers.

It has been found that to get the best search engine rankings, Organic Search Engine Optimization should rely on effective and efficient organization of the website, with content selected by your Organic Search Engine Optimization team so that keywords and phrases will not look ridiculous when used in the website content. Organic SEO starts with selecting the right Title and Meta tags, creation of on-page text with emphasis on content and layout, and then followed by insertion of internal links of the various web pages of your website. If these are followed by your Organic Search Engine Optimization team, keyword relevance and correct page formatting will increase.

Organic Search Engine Optimization also requires manual submissions of your website to directories and search engines. This helps assure you – the client – that Organic Search Engine Optimization will meet the special demands, regulations, and legal requirements of every search engine that is contacted by your Organic Search Engine Optimization

team.

Your Organic Search Engine Optimization team must rely on ethical link building techniques, not only to safeguard the security of your search engine rankings but also to allow your website descriptions to be placed under the right directory categories. Ethical Organic Search Engine Optimization link building will also help your website use only the correct resource web sites.

Does Organic Search Engine Optimization end here? Actually, no, your Organic Search Engine Optimization team must constantly track search engine submissions so that they can tweak and amend your website if needed to provide the best results for you. Organic Search Engine Optimization also requires that the team document their monitoring activities so you yourself know what is happening all the time.

It would be helpful if your Organic SEO team can track the numbers of visitors your site generates, to make it more convenient for you. After all, you need to concentrate on running your organization and/or business so Organic Search Engine Optimization should be a separate endeavor that others should do for you.

Otherwise, why outsource this function?

Organic Search Engine Optimization aims to help you bring in more visitors than you were getting before, so that your potential sales will be maximized in the process. But you need to avoid illicit practices and favor Organic Search Engine Optimization more because:

1) illicit marketing practices do not reflect well on you or the SEO team you hired.

2) Organic Search Engine Optimization does work when used the right way.

3) Organic Search Engine Optimization does not harm the search engine you will submit your website to, so you have a favorable image with search engines in general, and

4) Organic Search Engine Optimization is part of the use of best practices that have

been accepted by most of the Internet world nowadays.

How then do you find an Organic Search Engine Optimization team that you can work with? One way is to look for SEO industry data about who are the best Organic SEO players currently operating online. Examine the background of the company, and pay close attention to who they cite as their satisfied clients. You might want to contact these clients yourself discreetly so you can inquire into their Organic Search Engine Optimization experience with that SEO player. Another way is to ask people you know who have used Organic Search Engine Optimization themselves. Sometimes, the best way to get proper service is through ordinary word-of-mouth advertising from people you trust.

Search Engine Optimization: 11 Basic SEO Strategies for Beginners

Copyright (c) 2008 OnlineBizU.com

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process getting your website ready to be found in organic webs searches. By organic searches, I’m referring to web searches that appear naturally as the result of a search for a particular keyword or phrase, rather than appearing in the sponsored links (pay-per-click advertising) section of a search page.

Frankly, for the first few years I was online, the thought of doing my own SEO made my eyes cross, and I was overwhelmed at where to start. I even toyed with the idea of hiring a specialist to do this for me, but never got around to it. However, over time, I slowly began to see a pattern emerging, and started to optimize some of my sites accordingly. One of the best days of my business was when I recently ranked #1 for a particularly competitive search term.

I’m not a search engine optimization (SEO) specialist, nor do I play one on TV. However, even a new business owner who creates and updates her own websites can implement some very basic SEO strategies to make her website appear higher in the organic rankings on certain keyword searches.

Here are the 11 strategies that I regularly implement on my sites for better SEO positioning:

1. Page title tags. This is the page information that you see in the blue bar of your browser in the upper left-hand corner when you visit a website. For best SEO, use your top 2 keywords in your title tag. The best way to do that is separated with a bar, as illustrated in this example: Internet Marketing | Web Marketing.

2. Domain name: If at all possible, use one primary keyword in your domain name. You will have a slight edge over your competition by doing so. If you already have a domain that you have used for some time, include a keyword in the name of files for your website pages. Example: http://www.yoursite.com/internet-marketing.htm if your keyword is Internet marketing.

3. Meta tags. These are descriptions on a web page that are not seen by most visitors except when looking at the page source code in their browser. While the keyword and description metatags used to be the primary way that search engines indexed sites, that is no longer the case. However, you shouldn’t ignore them entirely, as it is still worthwhile to include them as a part of your page description. For optimal SEO, your meta description and keyword tags should be no more than 150 characters each.

4. Header tags. Header tags are the HTML code that indicates a headline, like H1, H2 and H3 and show up as bolded headlines in your page content. The first 3 header tags are the only ones you need to be concerned about, and the primary header tag, H1, is the most important. Use your primary keyword one time in the H1 tag, 2-3 times in your H2 tags, and multiple times in your H3 tags.

5. Alt image tag: The alt tag typically describes an image in a floating text window when you put your mouse over the image if the image isn’t able to be displayed. The best use of any tag is to use your keywords in your image descriptions.

6. Content formatting. Search engines pay attention to formatted content, as in when text is bolded, italicized, and underlined. Make sure that you are bolding your keywords in the content of your website.

7. Keyword density. Keyword density refers to the number of times a keyword or keyword phrase appears on a web page. Rather than trying to focus on the number of times a keyword appears in the content of your page, aim for a more natural density by keeping your keyword phrases in mind as you write the copy for your page. Optimally, keyword density should be between 2% – 7%. There are a number of keyword density checkers available online to assist you with determining the keyword density of a page.

8. Anchor text. Anchor text refer to links on a page that connect your visitor to other pages. So, rather than telling someone to “click here” in the content of your page, include a keyword in your anchor text, as in “click here for dog training tips.”

9.. Inbound links. Reciprocal link exchange (you link to my site and I’ll link to yours) used to be a great way to attract the attention of search engines to your site. Now, search engines pay attention only to the quality and popularity of the site providing you with an inbound link that is not a reciprocal link. One of the best ways to get quality inbound links back to your site is to submit articles to high traffic article directories and submit press releases to paid press release services.

A second way to gain high quality inbound links is by listing your site in search engine-friendly directories in which humans review the listings. Google and other search engines place more credibility in the directories in which the listings are reviewed by real people than they do other kinds of directories. Consequently, these links are weighted more heavily and favorably in the inbound link evaluation process.

10. New content. Content is still king, so one way to increase your page rank for a search term is to write high quality articles containing one or two of your keywords in the title and posting those regularly (weekly is best) to your site. Search engines are always seeking good, fresh, content, so your goal should be to make your site into an information-rich resource for your industry.

11. Site maps. There are sitemaps that help a visitor navigate a site, and sitemaps that are expressly designed for the search engines. The two are not the same. To enhance your site, submit an xml sitemap to Google Webmaster Central and Yahoo Site Explorer. I use XML Sitemaps, http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/, to build search engine-friendly sitemaps on my sites.

Search engine optimization strategy is not a difficult as it appears. Take some time to do some keyword research for your site, and then spend another 15 minutes a day employing a few of these strategies until you have a well-optimized site. Why pay for visitors through pay-per-click advertising if you don’t have to?

How to Raise your Rankings in the Search Engines With Some Basic SEO Search Engine Optimization Tips

I don’t know how many times I’ve been asked. “Many People ask How do I get traffic to my website?”

To best discuss this topic I should break this down into categories

1. Title Tags

The title Should contain keywords and keyword phrases that is important to your site. Our recommended maximum number of characters for this tag is 60.

Also when counting your characters remember that spaces are considered as well.

Titles should appeal to the reader otherwise even a top position will lose a lot of clicks.

For example, “shoes, nike shoes, best shoes, review shoes,” is unlikely to induce a click. What may induce a click would be like:

Shoes – Find out the latest styles on name brand shoes.

2. Description

The maximum number of characters I recommend for this Tag is 150. Any longer than this and it will only be cut off and may count against

your site being listed high in the search engines. Try to repeat your keywords that you used in your title in a proper sentence and in 3rd party. Advoid I, Me, Myself etc

3. Keywords

keywords My recommended maximum number of characters for this tag is 250. Any more than that may be considered spamming. Keep your keywords focused upon what your site is about.

Don’t think that if I use an assortment of different keywords that your site will be a seller. Targeted marketing is associated with your keywords.

4. Keyword Nesting

keyword nesting is nesting your top 5 most important keywords in the html page that the public will see. I would recommend using the keywords that you’ve used in your title, description.

5. Head Tags

Head Tags should be a repeat of your title tag. Most webmasters put their head tag right after the body tag.

6. Anchor Links

Anchor Links is one of the most important html tags that your site needs to gain search engine page rank

especially in google and msn.

Taxes: Basic Things You Need to Know

So you want to start your very own online business. Aside from having unlimited access to the Internet, you also need to be armed with adequate knowledge about taxes and your online business because without it, you will surely be at loss.

Online retailers, or more commonly known as e-tailers are not exempted from paying taxes, contrary to the common misconception of most people. E-tailers are still included in the rush for meeting the April 15 deadline for tax filings.

However, veteran e-tailers would say that the most difficult part for online business owners is navigating and complying with the confusing and complicated laws and conditions governing day to day sales taxes.

An Everyday Challenge If you are one e-tailer who would like to take your online business seriously, then you should be prepared to deal with the fact that handling and managing sales taxes is actually an everyday challenge.

The truth is, a lot of e-tailers are required by the government or their state to file and remit sales tax to states on either a monthly or regular interval. The basis for the filing of sales taxes would more or less depend on how much revenue you online business generates.

Few Tips For E-tailers

It is very vital that you understand your responsibility for sales tax. You must also know that the idea that e-commerce companies are required to collect and remit sales tax in every state is one big myth.

You only have to pay sales tax if you have nexus in that certain state. If you are a neophyte in online business, perhaps you don’t have an idea what the word nexus means, right?

Well, in online business jargon, nexus means a “connection”. Put in application, making a sale in another state does not mean that you automatically have a sales tax obligation.

You have to put in mind that there are many rules and laws that you need to consider before you can determine whether or not you will need to pay for sales tax in a certain state.

When you create your very own nexus in a certain state, you are then required to calculate, collect, report and remit the sales that you make in that certain state every time you have a transaction there.

This is the reason why you are obliged to pay tax sales based on the location of your business.

However, you must also keep in mind that there are also other ways to create your very own nexus in a state. Aside from physical presence or structure of your business establishment in a certain state, you can also establish a nexus by having sales representatives present in that state, tradeshows, mobile stores, etc.

Trying to make an online business work amidst the seemingly confusing and complicated rules that apply to different states can be quite impossible.
