During the Worldwide recession the lotteries jackpots are still huge therefore people winning them still need to invest few million of dollars or euros or any other currency to some business Internet business is still one of the most attractive directions of investment. Now it is very difficult to create a competitive and successful e-shop, web design studio, online project management service or any other affiliation site because of huge competition. Some entrepreneurs still try to create social networks like Facebook, MySpace, Bebo, but majority fails. Does that mean that no one can repeat the success of Twitter or Facebook which started with very little budgets? Probably not, but only 1 of 100 attempts may succeed.

What about bigger chance of success? Let’s see what big social networks offer to people:

* Lots of contacts to choose from different countries, speaking different languages;
* Lots of interests to discuss using social networking tools such as micro-blogging, groups, forums, social bookmarking, file share etc.
* Unified communication features for all members;
* Generic forms of marketing and ads;
* Possibilities of using third parties applications (widgets) to satisfy specific needs.

When people have general interests in communication with people worldwide in own and general language huge social networks are the best solution. No one can beat Facebook or MySpace in traffic as they satisfy this communication thirst. However still remains the need for communication in local circle. Example is Hyves.nl social network in the Netherlands, which is more popular than Facebook or MySpace. The newest hype of WWW is Twitter – the simple micro-blogging platform with lots of the additional services around. Twitter is huge, but that is not going to last forever because of Twitter clones. Someone counted more than 200 of Twitter-like sites in different countries. That shows the power of the locally based similar services to giant social networks. If someone has a spare million of dollars, he/she should think about creating a local social network in some country or region (example of regional social networking success is Netlog.com – one of the most popular Social networks in Europe). Of course there is almost no market without competition (I doubt there is big market in Zimbabwe where people do not have electricity, not speaking about computers and internet), so it is good to analyze the market first.

If we look at the social networks list we can clearly see another interesting criteria – the interest based social networking. That’s the main competitor of big social networks, as they cannot provide the interface for every interest. All they can do is allowing third party widgets to be installed making the profile and management of the personal space messy and troublesome (look at the MySpace profiles). The interest based social network can be international; therefore it can be easily tested on some local markets first and then launched internationally. That makes management of investment easier and more effective.

What can be the main interests of people to be transferred to virtual space in the shape of social network with friends ties, status updates, blogging, picture, video exchange, bookmarking features, groups and chats etc.? Classmates, dating, blogging, job search are the main ones attracting huge amount of people, but still there are some other areas.

Let’s review it personally. I have a Russian Blue cat so I participate in such social network for cat lovers as UnitedCats.com (by local country, of course). If I would like to leave this network I would choose a brand new CuteAsHell social network for pets in general. Why I like this social network instead of Facebook Russian Blue Cats Group with almost 300 members? Because it has very nice features for cat lovers such as virtual gifts (all kinds of kitty toys and equipment what makes this gift feature unique), photo voting is called “Pat the cat”, blog can be written on behalf a cat or owner which make really interesting to read. Also I know that some of the participants of this community are professional cat breeders which can really give me help if my cat gets sick or I do not understand her character. Neither Facebook or MySpace cannot give me that.

I travel a little, therefore I participate in travelers social network WYAN.com where people share their reviews about countries, tours, day trips and of course shares pictures of the places of interest. I can easily make decision where to go and what to see. I always can share my plans and can even make some friends in that country to meet them once I arrive and hear another story about the country rather than tour guides tell. Probably I will have lots of troubles looking for similar information in Facebook and Myspace.

As a professional I have my profile in LinkedIn and participate in local professionals discussions as well as global ones. Here I can share my professionalism, participate in discussions about specific work related issues. Here I can find another job, or find the entrepreneurs for my business plan. Have you ever seen people who are hosting their resumes and CV in Facebook or MySpace? I have not.

As you can see the interest social networks are very good for sharing the personal interests and setting the communication among people with similar interest. In Facebook I always see my friends speaking about the things I am not interested or even do not understand (hear programmers speaking – if you are not in IT market their language will be like gibberish). In the interest social network I will always understand what my peers are talking about.

Investor should think if there are any interests which are covered quite poorly. For example pet social network market is quite saturated as some serious people made some investment. But maybe bikers’ social network still would make a nice ROI? There are always some profitable markets uniting golfers, cooking lovers, photographs, poker players etc. which must be investigated and some competitive social networks with unique tools created. Technologically it is not very difficult as there are so many open source systems with huge social networking add-ons collections.

Another important feature of new social media should be a flexibility to adopt new trends in case some phenomena like Twitter emerges in next couple of years. Status updates are so popular (like SMS in Mobile world), that every social network must have this feature and in some cases it must be better developed to fit the needs of specific interest. For example poker players community enjoy the icons of cards speaking about their hands, however Twitter cannot have any icons. So maybe poker related Twitter clone FTsweat could provide such feature? Very big attention must be paid for internal messaging system as it may become very powerful communication and marketing tool. Look at the MySpace example. They have 125 million of active internal messaging system users and once they will build a webmail service they will automatically become 3rd largest email provider in the World. Interest based social network may never do better email service as Yahoo or Gmail, but some handy features can keep some members using internal mail outside the social network space.

Creating social network is not enough. Every social network should have additional applications for third party websites – widgets and apps for iPhones and G-phones and all the rest new type of mobile devices allowing not to use computer for communication. Without them every social network is doomed sooner or later. But let’s leave this topic for future.

Summing up. If you are an investor, please consider creating local or quite narrow interest based social network in order to kick Facebook’s and MySpace’s ass. That’s not impossible. That’s better than wasting money creating one more Facebook or MySpace.

Is Google Planning Another Page Rank Update?

Those of you that pay attention to the Google Page Rank are still waiting for another Google update. It’s been almost 90 days since the last Google update and word around the web is that Google should be doing another mass update in August.

Many of you built new sites in the beginning of 2007 and still have no Google page rank after all the hard work you put into building out quality back links, optimizing and adding new pages, and every other tedious detail involved with properly optimizing your site for the engines.

Well the word is that the wait is almost over. Google will be updating all its servers and handing out grades in the near future. All the speculation about what will work and won’t work for the best results in your sites placement are about to show themselves.

Once the Google page rank update starts, it will take a couple of weeks to complete so you will probably see some fluctuation in your page rank on different pages of your site for a while but things will settle down and your new page rank will be good until the next update.

As I remained hooked on to Times Now (which, by far, gave the best coverage possible and reminded me of CNN’s Iraq war coverage way back in 1991), and without sleeping for a moment for the first twelve hours, saw the mockery of our democracy, I really felt sad for our brave policemen who gave up their lives – just like the many innocent people who also paid the price – for a non-committed, spineless, political class ruling this great country. Every time a political leader spoke, it was a feeling of shame that I felt somewhere deep within, and couldn’t help but wonder when we would see the end of this rotten, old and decaying lot who can sell this country to the dogs for a few hundred crores. It was indeed sad to see the nation pay the price for their uncommitted, visionless leadership. Haven’t we had enough of disgusting and shameless statements like ‘we are planning to modernize our equipments and increase budgets for our intelligence departments…’ etc? Forget having any kind of moral responsibility to resign instantly from ministerial posts after their sheer failure to protect the country time and again, they are such a bunch of illiterate and shameful individuals that they don’t even feel ashamed and embarrassed to come up and give those sickening and predictably stale, dated statements again and again.
And as I thought of the whys of 26/11, I couldn’t help but put the blame on our government’s virtual anti-Hindu sentiments, for all practical purposes not just today, but over years and years. Of course, I had been feeling this especially during the last fortnight and almost everyday, as I saw newspaper after newspaper devote endless newsprint to “Hindu terrorists” and “Hindu bombs”. In my entire life, I don’t remember reading even once any media house in India calling anyone a “Muslim terrorist” or any bomb a “Muslim bomb”; and rightly so… But the true or false revelation (of course, I believe that whether Hindu or Muslim, the guilty should be brought to law) of one rare exception of finding a Hindu behind an act of terrorism gave our entire ruling political class the freedom to instantly coin a new word called the Hindu bomb to malign Hinduism (and, but obviously, the BJP too with the elections round the corner). Well, it’s very easy to do so in India. That’s because Hindus are the people who, despite being the majority in Hindustan, are the people who can be abused in India and gotten away with. Because Hindus, in reality, aren’t terrorists or bomb makers and are supposed to be tolerant, patient and – dare I repeat what Gandhi said – even cowards! So Hindus can be abused in this country by every scheming political class wanting to garner the Muslim vote bank during elections. It’s not just that they can be tortured brutally (even women) by investigating agencies, but the fact is that for Hindu arrests, there aren’t even any human rights groups jumping in and creating farcical noises.
But that’s not all. Assisting the political class mostly willingly (and, at rare times, due to no alternative choice) in this conspiracy is almost the entire Indian media and its lot of fake and mostly half-educated journalist fraternity. Pampering Muslims blindly – even terrorists caught red handed – or their extremism all the time gives most media houses and journalists an illusion of large hearted (farcical) secularism. Some media houses have made it their business to support Muslim terrorists et al because then, there are crappy human rights groups around the world who fund them and praise them and give them awards by organising pseudo-intellectual seminars and gatherings. Of course, for those media houses that refuse to tow the government’s line of press release campaigns, the government would put tens of income tax, foreign exchange management, MRTP cases, etc., against them, so that to save their backsides, they start falling in line.
And pampering and useless tolerance of the wrongs of any community, when it comes to the nation’s security, is what is the sure recipe of 26/11s and the reason behind India’s fate today. This is exactly what doesn’t let governments in India take rightful actions. Because their fear all the time is that if a Muslim bomber is hanged, a Muslim terrorist is interrogated, a Muslim-majority locality is searched, either they will lose their vote banks or – according to their illiterate definitions of secularism – not remain ultra secular. And that is the difference between the USA and India. The Americans know how to differentiate facts from pseudo intellectualism. They have nothing against the Muslim world as such – nor have we ever had or should have – but they have decided not to tolerate Al Qaeda type of extremism. And once decided, they have the courage to go all out behind destroying the very roots of such organizations. And that’s the difference between a strong nation and a weak spineless nation full of opportunist politicians. A strong nation takes the right decisions and goes all out to implement it. A weak spineless nation just says ‘we will take strong action’, then does nothing; and given the first opportunity, creates new farcical terms like “Hindu bombs” through slavish media houses, in order to show how ‘secular’ their outlook is and to create a false air of alarm that even Hindus are creating similar terrorism… How utterly shameful!
How will a nation take strong action when no one has the courage to come out in the open and say the problem categorically and clearly? And every “Indian Muslim” will agree that every non-Indian and terrorism-believing anti-Indian (Muslim or Hindu) should be given the most ruthless punishment and should be pulled out from every hideout of theirs and thrown into jails, for “believing in democracy and secularism doesn’t mean compromising with the discipline and security of a nation.” No nation does it; and we should stop doing it right away. At The Sunday Indian, we have always believed in being logical and fair. If George Bush was wrong on Iraq, we repeatedly went behind him through all our magazines; and if we thought that there was logic in ‘Azaadi for Kashmir’, we went ahead and did a cover story on it… and with the same belief, today we assert that democracy and secularism cannot be maintained by starting a campaign branding a bomb made by some Hindu terrorist as a Hindu bomb. The pillars of democracy and secularism are about identifying ruthlessly – and without looking at religion – who are those who are time and again threatening this country’s security, and going behind them ruthlessly. And that’s when in peace we will know how to love people of all religions; and just like Dr. Zakir Hussain and Abdul Kalam in India, and Barack “Hussein” Obama in USA, one day we will proudly also have a Muslim prime minister and not even realise what his religion is – because, above everything, we all need to be Indians, and we all need to do everything possible to give that sense of Indianness pride and respectability. If 26/11 does not make us realise the need to do it, nothing ever will!
