I have talked to many readers of my blog recently, a lot asking about Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). Asking everything from what is it, to how do I go about it cheaply, to much more detailed questions. Admittedly I didn’t know all the answers, I knew alot but not all. That’s mainly because Search Engines (SE’s) like Google, MSN and Yahoo, keep search algorithms secret.
Now this might sound scary and make it almost impossible one would suggest to get a good ranking from such SE’s. However this isn’t strictly true, there a few things you can do and these will help you alot in getting your site out there and seen.
This first blog will deal with techniques and how they can make or break a sites rank. Further blogs will talk about Meta Tags and other key suggestions as well as talking about how accessibility and SEO go hand – in hand.
These tips are not fully detailed, nor should be taken directly. It is suggested by myself that you read between the lines, do some more research, or approach me individually at admin*at*andykinsey.com or leave a comment below.
There are two main catagories of technique, these are; White Hat and Black Hat.
Black Hat - deals with the things SE’s dislike alot, and penalise websites for. These include things like “link farming”, “doorway pages”, keyword stuffing, spamdexing and other such activities (which i wont go into right now).
White Hat – talks about the things SE’s are known to like or that SE’s are likely to like, things such as;
Fresh Content, good meta tagging, inbound links from “good neighbourhoods”, no dead ends, easy to navigate websites, submitting to directories (DMOZ etc) clean/non-clutters code and more.
If a website was to use black hat tricks (and it should be added, gets caught) all SE’s have been known to blacklist websites permanently or place you in a “sandbox” this is to say your site can’t be see from the SE for a particular period of time. Some BH tricks are worse than others, for example link farming is almost certain to be penalised as its easy to spot bad neighbourhoods.
Where as if a site uses White Hat techniques, although not guaranteed, it is much more likely SE’s will link and rank you highly. Some techniques grab attention more than others, some are more important than others. But it is not the same for all websites!.
Each website can benefit from good SEO techniques but if used incorrectly or not implemented correctly they will simply be a waste of time.
Meta Tags are those things at the top of a websites code. Literally they contain information about information, but its best to look at these as “attention grabbing friends”. You have to take care of your meta data as much as your content, if you mess them up you can mess up your ranking from Search Engines (SE’s). The measureable importance of Meta Tags is a matter of great contention, some say it now means nothing, others like myself know it does have importance even if the edge has gone a little. Either way managing Meta Data is of key importance to any website and should not be over looked. Also its easy to forget managing this Meta Data is very much a full time job, even if you already have a good ranking.
A meta tag can contain anything from information about a websites designer, its SEO provider, but the things SE’s recognise (mostly) are the Keywords and the Description (and robots), so this is what I will concentrate on in this blog.
Keywords – one of the most important things on a website. I make no quarms over this, get this wrong and to be blunt, you’re dead in the water. They can do as much harm as good, so get it right.
[Before you look at keywords you need to remember , firstly shorter keyword phrases are used more often (for example "design" is used more often than "web design" which is more often than "andy kinsey web design"), selecting your keyword phrases is very important, you have to specialise in an area to get seen there but not be so specific you lock out other markets which could be of interest. This may make no sense but it will as we go on.]
As a general rule of thumb your keywords/labels/phrases tags should be of no more than 10-15 words, this means you can have this many keywords of around 7-10 phrases/keywords. (Anymore than this and your Keyword stuffing, a very black hat trick likely to be penalised.) Selecting these keywords is important and you have to be careful to specify but not so much you close your market. So…
-Do some research into your competitors keywords
-Do not use the same word twice if you are to do this use the word once and follow keywords (so andy 1, andy 2 would become andy,1,2, etc)
-Use keyword analysis tools such as google keyword centre
Then use your research for a month, analyse the results (google webmaster tools will help you with this), give each phrase/word a mark out of ten. then change them, a month later compare results, then again and keep doing this. not only will you tweak til your perfect but google will like that you refresh them, they class as fresh content!
marking them on a scale in accordance to relevance, general rank after a period of time, total number of hits via this keyword/phrase. do this in a spreadsheet, if you can keep this spreadsheet archive and use it well your site will continually improve not only over a few months but it will allow you to see trends of change a long time before your competition will ever do. ….unless they read this blog too, in which case…best of luck to you all.
Another application of keywords for SE’s is keyword / content ratio, this means how often keywords appear in your content. You should aim for between 7% and 15% keyword density. Anymore and SE’s get cautious and its keyword stuffing again, and less and your not doing your job properly as a website owner and maintainer.
Notes From History: Over the years the importance of Keywords has decreased due to abuse by various “black hatters” whom abused the system, today the fact google and other SE’s don’t show todays results but rather a month or two behind it is hard to see how important it is at this second, or any other second for that matter. The idea of time lapsing keywords is one you should consider, circulating keywords is of importance.
Description - Although not as important as keywords a description is what brings people to your site (ultimately). This is because unless your submitted via DMOZ (or another directory) / and even if you are in some cases, Search Engines will show this description and your title as the search result.
There are certain words that draw people in like “free”, “sale” and ”discount” but use them incorrectly or too often and people will just not click, links that says “100% free” for example, I will instinctively ignore, most the time this is on the basis of my subconscious saying This IS SPAM! . so word it carefully refresh it often, be specific to your target audience and do not repeat yourself, or make yourself look silly.
This is to say if your title says your a web design company, don’t repeat this in your description, or do but re-word it call yourself an Internet design agency, this will draw people in to your site, and will more often than not mean they stay longer.
Practical Advice: Your description should not be of more than 140-200char in order to ensure all SE’s can show it within their search results pages.
Robots - this is not one of the more important factors of a web page, however the information it contains is often vital. meta robots (not to be confused with link factors) in essence tell a search bot/spider what it can and can not do with your page. For example – “follow” means a SE can follow links on a page as “no follow” means it can not follow them. “Index” and “noindex” do as described, “snippet” means it can take extracts from your site to show as results elsewhere (if an SE wants to, though normally it doesn’t). The most common meta bot “all” is assumed by SE’s to me “index,follow,snippet*” (*snippet is not confirmed).

After my recent postings I have been approached by several people asking about accessibility and how does it link to SEO, as they don’t quite understand what I meant when I said this in my first blog that they go hand-in-hand.
By hand-in-hand I mean that if you make a site accessible (as per the content) then you will make the site accessible to Search Engines (SE’s). This will mean content easy to read, follow, and be read aloud, it will mean images have alt-tags and that links will have title tags and meaningful keywords attached (not click here!). This also helps because if people can get access to your site they are more likely to not only recommend your site but maybe become a client. Hope that clears it up, and also reasons to make a site accessible. Also there will be a blog series on accessibility soon
More for your internal workings
URL’s – SEO friendly URL’s are helpful for (believe it or not as the name suggests) SE’s. This is where the likes of index.php?page=1&model=2 becomes /pagetitle/modelname. From this it is clear to see how it helps SE’s because you now have a more descriptive URL for your pages. But how to do this. Well if you have wordpress, there is setting for this. If not research .htaccess files and in particular mod_rewrite functions, they are quite easy once you get used to them.
If you can’t use .htaccess for whatever reason simply use directly relate directory names and file names, not useless rubbish like page1.html instead use aboutcars.html etc.
Sitemaps – This is a fantastic tool for showing google what is on your site and where. You need to submit them to google and other SE’s for the best results. a simple search on google for sitemaps will bring up automatic generators if you cant make one yourself. though be careful some give the same priority to all pages, not the best of ideas.
So moving on to todays topic External Opportunities
Link Building – This in general is one of the more important features of SEO work, getting a site “good, reliable and continual growth links” is very hard work, but the more you get of these links the more SE’s will rank you. If you get recommended by a website (for example BoagWorld, TWiT or Silicon [for web industry people]) SE’s will take you more seriously and rank you better than if you, say, just have links from your friends unrelated site, the same applies to blogs. A good way to make these links is to offer a link exchange, though only do this with relevant sites, even offer to just have their link on for a while.
If a site has a forum, talk in there, comment wisely but do not blatantly plug your website. build a reputation for being a good person and company then link, they will ban you for spamming, if you do spam! and you will instinctively if your not careful.
Finally remember these are references, almost as good as word of mouth, have a good reference and a visitor to a site becomes a client of your company.
Further to this it is important to know that you are better to have a link from one site with a page rank of 5 or above than several with a rank of 1.
Social Bookmarking / Networking – Although not as important for most sites, SB/SN is something that is become more and more important as the Internet continues to grow at a hugely under-estimated rate. If a site is Dugg (by digg.com), Stumbled (by stumbleupon.com), Red (by reddit) or Flurked (by flurk.net*), on a regular basis it will grow a ranking within these communities and more people will visit, your site will get known for being a great site and highly recommended by Internet users. However again these sites are tough on spam. Getting friends to help is a good way to avoid being seen as a spammer, the server see’s a new ip and knows its not you (or should i say thinks)….proxy is another way but this is black hat so i don’t suggest it.
Further to the above sites that allow microblogging such as TWITTER (twitter.com/andykinsey) allow for blatant spamming, but if you are good, update a few times a day or week you will gain momentum and following (like a blog) and people will follow you and visit your recommended sites. Just looking at some of my recent twitters i should really stop blatant self promotion, but i wont because i know SE’s like these sites (twitter and SN’s).
Word of Mouth – this is the most important part of any SEO effort, believe it or not. If your site is recommend by a person by talking it will stick in the human brain more than if you just get linked to a site, its why podcasts do so well (in general). Talking is a great tool, so use it, go to meet ups for your industry make friends with everyone and become the envy of everyone as you get their work. more to come on network meetings soon.
Business Cards - This is one of the final/first chances you will have to make an impression, good business cards sell you and everything about you and your company. Having a good business card is a key weapon in beating your competition.
Finally – (well almost) – ensure you submit your sites to every directory and search engine you can (beware some cost money like yahoo directory, but their SE is free).

Andys SEO tips are:
Look after your meta data, and it will look after your site.
Refresh your content (both on your pages and your meta data) regularly.
Keep clean code, google will only read upto 40% of your pages at once (it is thought) so make the most of it.
Use Sitmaps and SEO URL’s
Avoid link farms at ALL costs.
Submit sites to all SE’s and directories
Link Exchange to the bigger websites in your industry
Gain a reputation via forums, and social networks, but do not spam (ask friends to help).
Most importantly – Make your site accessible and SE’s rankings will show favour to you.

Two years ago, Google presented a personalized homepage for account holders. This weekend, it officially rolled out personalized search results as a member service.
Now appearing on Google account pages, a prompt-box reads: “New! Google services will now be more personalized with Google Accounts. Learn More.”
Google account holders, (those with Google Toolbar, Bookmarks, Gmail, AdWords, and other Google member-based appliances) will now, by default, see results tailored to their own unique search histories whenever they are signed in to their accounts.

Personalization will subtly skew results in favour of documents or URLs visited regularly by individual users. If, for example, a user tends to visit a popular travel site when booking tickets and accommodation, results from that site are more likely to rank prominently in relevant travel related keyword queries.
According to Google’s Web Help Center,
“Personalized Search is part of Google’s ongoing effort to make your search experience more relevant to you. Using Personalized Search, you can:
Get the results most relevant to you, based on what you’ve searched for in the past
View and manage your past searches, including the webpages, images, news headlines and Froogle results you’ve clicked on
Create bookmarks you can access from any computer
Personalized Search orders your search results based on your past searches, as well as the search results and news headlines you’ve clicked on. You can view all these items in your Search History and remove any items you’d like.
Early on, you may not notice a huge impact on your search results, but as you build up your search history, your personalized search results will continue to improve.” Google is drawing user information from Google Search History, Google Bookmarks, and personalized Google homepages. A note on a Google Accounts page says they are not using personal information gleaned from Gmail or AdWords accounts. Though not used to affect personalized results, Google is also storing search results from Google Image Search, Google News, Froogle, Google Video and Google Maps in the Search History file of its individual users.
Being logged into any Google account triggers personalized results. Also, signing up for a new Google account automatically enrolls users in the three Google products personal information are being drawn from.
Users with privacy concerns can stem Google’s collection of data by entering their user account and clicking off the default “Enable Search History” box-option. According to Danny Sullivan, who wrote a detailed review of the sign-up and opt-out process at SearchEngineLand, “You can override the decision to have Search History enabled, but honestly, you’ll need sharp eyes. I completely missed that this was added as a default choice to the new account sign-up page. In fact, I missed it twice, as I tested the system by making two different accounts.” (source: Google Ramps Up Personalized Search â Search Engine Land)
Personalization will alter the search results seen by unique users over time though people might not notice a huge difference in the first weeks. As a person’s search history accumulates data, search references will increasingly show frequently visited sites and references to sites that share common links with pages in the user’s search history and those of similar users.
For the SEO industry, the implications of personalization are both stark and subtle. While the trend towards regionalization has limited clear standards for judging overall Google rankings for the past few years, the advent of personalized results makes the standard website ranking report somewhat useless.
Personalization pretty much kills the ambitions of the simplest SEO shops. Successful SEO campaigns will nevër again be measured by strong rankings. SEOs will come to think about their services in a very different way than many do today. It’s no longer about making a document or site rank high on results pages, it’s now about making them rank well consistently.
Optimization techniques for personalized search results will include expertise in site usability, visitor retention, traffic funneling, bookmarking and social tagging, all of which entered the unwritten book of SEO best practices over the past few years. It will also involve a stronger dedication to content creation, document upkeep and overall resourcefulness.
Site usability has a direct effect on visitor retention. Websites with easily accessed, high quality information will likely see visitors stay on site longer and come back more frequently. Similarly, websites that move visitors from one page to the next in a logical fashion should (logically) tend to score better in personalized result sets. As Google records the number of times a specific user visits a site, those a person visits most often will score better placements in that user’s personalized results.
Google Bookmarking, or prompting specific users to add a site or document to their Google Bookmark file, will become an integral tool for SEOs. Google draws information from Google Bookmarks to develop personalized sets of search results for each user.
Google supports its own custom bookmark system and stores individual user’s bookmark files on its own servers. Getting users to add a site to their Google Bookmarks file isn’t as simple as adding a Ctrl+D Internet Explorer “Bookmark Us” link, though adding that link is strongly advised. There are extensions available allowing individuals to copy their IE or Firefox bookmarks into Google Bookmarks.
A more direct Google Bookmarking method involves prompting visitors to include a RSS feed from your site to their personalized version of Google’s homepage by placing an Add to Google button on the website. Another direct method is to use the Google Gadgets API to create customized content-feeds that visitors can add to their unique personalized Google homepage.
Please note, none of these methods actually gets a site or document into individual Google Bookmark files directly but serves to steer users towards including them. The last two will put site content directly on an individual user’s Google homepages.
Does personalization mark the end of the spider? Absolutely not. Personalized results will rely heavily on data accumulated by Google’s bots as they analyze content between linked sites. The inclusion of one document in several people’s Google Bookmarks files will strengthen the chances that other documents sharing links from the one in several Bookmarks files will appear in those user’s personalized results. Personalization will have a beneficial effect on the ethical side of the link building industry, starting with an immediate growth providing social search link building and bridging services.
As Google scans sites in its users search history and bookmark files, it will follow links it finds there. Many of those documents will also appear in that user’s search history or bookmark files. They will also appear in the search histories and bookmarks of other users with similar search histories. Those documents are likely to fare well in searches conducted by numerous other users because Google will spot the shared interest by following links and matching search histories against each other.
Google will also be better able to spot and eradicate link sp@m by enabling Google to better analyze how individual users treat links as they come across them. Given the vast majority of users will tend to stray away from obvious sp@m, and links that do not get clicked will be less useful as time goes on, much of the incentive to try to manipulate results with spammy links is removed.
In all, Google’s move towards presenting personalized search engine results will likely create a better search experience for its users. Though there are a wide array of privacy concerns Google will have to weave its way through and several assurances it will have to make, the creation of a truly effective personalized search engine ranks among the holy grails of geekdom for AI enthusiasts. This week, they took a big step forward. It will be interesting to see where this step leads us.

How does Google rank your webpages and websites?
According to Google, there are 200 factors that Google uses to rank your webpages against the competitors. Most of other search engines like Bing and Yahoo Search also have these common factors. You cannot assume your website to rank on the first page of search results if it is new, doesn’t have good fresh content, does not follow SEO guidelines and incorporates Black Hat SEO techniques.
Let’s see some of the top ranking factors according to my research and data collected from the internet. Note: I am not explicitly mentioning Social Networking Factors since it is a very interesting factor and deserves for a separate article which I will be writing soon.

1. Age of Domain: If your domain is newly registered and is just a few weeks or even months old, then be patience. Patience is the key. You have a long road ahead of you. A domain is like a property, the older it gets, the more value. The age of your website helps build trust. If your website has been online for several years, chances are you have an established business, you have a very good network and a constant flow of visitors.
2. Domain Hosting: Where is your site hosted? Find out through your hosting company what continent or country your site is hosted in. This can often times play a large role in search rankings. Always use a reputable hosting company. If your company is US based then use a hosting company in the United States. Also, I always recommend a dedicated IP when you can. There are virtual dedicated and cloud hosting solutions that are more affordable. Never use the cheapest hosting. The reality is, if you cannot afford hosting you should re-consider the business…I know this is harsh but very true.
3. Your Neighbors: If you have a virtual server, which sites like Godaddy usually are have been known to house hundreds of websites on one server. Make sure that your neighbors on your server are not classified as spam.
4. URL Structure: Make sure your URL structures are very clean. There should not be any random strings of characters at the end of your URL’s. This is part of the onsite search engine optimization process as well.
5. Content: Content is very important. To start make sure you have text on all your important pages, then make sure it is good text consisting of your targeted keywords spread throughout naturally. Simply put, ALWAYS write your content for humans, your website visitors first and NEVER write content for the solo purpose to achieve Google search engine rankings. Chances are the content will not be user focused or provide value to your visitors.
6. Internal Link Structure: Make sure your inner pages are linked correctly. Visitors should have easy made pathways connecting to your other pages from every page of your website. Make sure the code of your website is verified and keep flash and JavaScript to a minimum, if you can. Essentially make sure the site is clean, easy to use and interlinked to help the user experience.
7. Trust: Do you at least have a mailing address listed on your website? You should if you don’t. Google likes to see trust factors on websites so anything you can add that could help build trust for your audience will benefit your rankings. I always recommend having a phone number on each page of your website. Make it easy for people to do business with you, it all starts with establishing trust and that starts with contact information on your website.
8. Keywords: Make sure your website is optimized using your keywords. This means any alt tags for images, meta page information and existing content at the very least of things. Remember to naturally optimize your website based on the content of each page of your website.
9. Bounce Rate: Although bounce rate might not seem important if Google sees that nobody hangs out on your website for more than a few seconds before they leave this could be a ranking problem over time. Make changes to get visitors engaged with your website. Simple things, like video, newsletter sign up, call to actions, etc will help improve your bounce rate over time. Make sure you have proper tracking on your website, such as Google analytics.
10. Outbound links: Make sure the websites that you link to are 100% relevant to your business and industry. If you sell animals toys but you are linking to a site that sells shoes that is not very relevant and over time could really impact your rankings. Bottom line is if it makes sense to link to another site, then do so, but remember you could be sending your visitors away from your site.
11. Inbound Links: I know this was a list of my top 10, but I felt I had to mention inbound links. The key here (speaking as a white hat SEO person), don’t buy or exchange links. Market and promote your business online to build visitors to your website over time. If you do, then the relevant links will follow! **Note: As the Google (and yes there are 2 other major search engines!) algorithm changes there are always new ranking factors that come into play, such as the page load time and many others. I am sure when I re-do this list a year from now, there may be another one or two additional factors. As I told you earlier, Google looks into 200 factors when assigning a rank number to your website. Stay tuned to HowGoogleRanks.com, read all the articles and tips. Google AdSense is an awesome, amazing tool that can make you a lot of money for doing very little work. That is, once you understand it and the techniques that go into making it work for you. Google AdSense is a program through Google that has you put advertisements on your website and in return you will get paid every time someone clicks on one of the ads.
When I first began internet marketing I made the beginner mistake of just slapping ads where ever I wanted and expected them to make me money. But I found out that there is more to it than that.
One very basic tip is do not add Google AdSense to your website before it is finished. Google AdSense ads are generally based on the content of your website. If you put Google AdSense on a page that has nothing on it, Google will simply send random ads to that page. But it won’t change as soon as you update your page. It could be days or even weeks before Google crawls your site and tells AdSense to run a different set of ads that are more relevant to your site.
Another tip is to read the Google AdSense Terms of Service before you place your ads anywhere. In case you don’t want to read through all the legal mumbo-jumbo, here is a quick breakdown of what you can not do with Google AdSense:
Pornography, adult or mature content
Violent content
Content related to racial intolerance or advocacy against any individual, group or organisation
Excessive profanity
Hacking/cracking content
Gambling or casino-related content
Illicit drugs and drug paraphernalia content
Sales of beer or hard alcohol
Sales of tobacco or tobacco-related products
Sales of prescription drugs
Sales of weapons or ammunition
Sales of products that are replicas or imitations of designer goods
Sales or distribution of coursework or student essays
Content regarding programs which compensate users for clicking ads or offers, performing searches, surfing websites or reading emails
Any other content that is illegal, promotes illegal activity or infringes on the legal rights of others ”
When I was new to internet marketing I hadn’t read Google AdSense’s TOS and made some mistakes. Luckily I caught them before Google did and saved my butt. Hopefully that list will help keep you out of trouble as well.
Google pays out once per month and you have to have a certain amount in your account otherwise it rolls over to the next month and you have to continue building on that amount. Even if you reach the amount where Google pays out, you still have to wait until the month is over to be paid. If you selected to get paid by check then you must have 0 built up in your account and Google will take for having to pay you by check. If you prefer to be paid via PayPal or direct deposit into your bank account then Google pays out at and there is no charge to you for that.

Yes, the company is still growing at rates that would be the envy of the rest of the Fortune 500. But its core business is slowing, its stock is down, its Android mobile platform generates scant revenue, and competition (hello, Facebook) is fierce. Can Google find its footing in this brave new world?
Stroll across the Googleplex in Mountain View, Calif., and you are confronted by a world that sparkles a bit more than whatever slightly dreary one you just left. Massive stone busts of ocean explorers like Jacques Cousteau fix their gaze on the cobbled paths that flow into the main Google buildings. At sunny tables outside, Google employees — the coolest, most confident techies you’ll meet — eat their free food and chat animatedly about who-knows-what arcane computer algorithms, or the latest must-do pastime of the young and affluent Silicon Valley set, like kite-boarding or indoor skydiving.
It looks a lot like the midday break at some elite college campus. But almost 12 years after it was launched by precocious Stanford grad students Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Google and its founders are grappling with a very grownup set of problems. Google’s core business, online search, is slowing. That is partly due to Google’s own success; it’s hard to keep posting record growth rates when you dominate a business so thoroughly — Google sites lead the U.S. market with 64% of all searches conducted. But more crucially, the web has changed significantly since Google became a verb. There is (at long last) fresh competition from Microsoft’s Bing, and also a new wave of sites and services that offer alternatives for consumers’ time and attention — and the advertisers that follow them.
The Googlers certainly know this, but in classic Innovator’s Dilemma fashion, the company seems unsure about how to move beyond the core search business that has brought it such massive success. Google has placed expensive bets on acquisitions, chief among them its .6 billion purchase of YouTube, a .1 billion wager on ad network DoubleClick, and more recently its 0 million purchase of mobile advertising platform AdMob. But none of those deals have yet significantly diversified Google’s -billion-a-year revenue stream: Google’s main focus continues to be driving people back to the search box and the ad dollars that Google collects for helping marketers reach highly targeted consumers. Even Google’s most successful new product, the Android operating system for smartphones, generates scant revenue for the company: Google gives the licenses free to mobile-phone operators to facilitate, you guessed it, searches and use of other Google services on mobile phones. And while it lets its whip-smart engineers dedicate a portion of their workdays to dreaming up the coolest products for the web, all that Googley experimentation hasn’t had a huge impact on the bottom line.
That was fine when the search business was expanding at 30% or 40% a year, and Google’s revenue was growing at twice that. Long-term projections for growth in the search business are more in the 15% to 17% range. Yet analysts estimate that 91% of Google’s revenue still comes from the AdWords and AdSense business model that Google built around Page and Brin’s breakthrough PageRank algorithm. Even more telling, an estimated 99% of its profit does too. This year’s projected earnings growth of 18% is a third of what Google averaged over the past five years. A lot of companies would kill for that growth, but for technology companies, and Google in particular, those numbers don’t impress. Google is rounding a corner that all the fruit smoothies at its Silicon Valley campus make it hard to pull back from. This year Google (GOOG) has joined the ranks of just about every great technology company before it, including IBM (IBM), eBay (EBAY), Cisco (CSCO), Microsoft (MSFT), and Oracle (ORCL). Google, against its will, and defying its massive cash hoard, is transitioning from a growth company to — and there is no kind way to put it — a cash cow. That ranks right up there with being a former supermodel, but it is a taint Google can’t seem to shake right now, at least not on Wall Street. It’s a big part of the reason that Google shares are down 21% since Jan. 4, underperforming the Nasdaq (up 1%).
Up against the ever-changing web
Some investors also worry about Google’s ability to keep pace with consumers’ evolving use of the web. Say you want to buy running shoes to train for a marathon. Five years ago you would have simply Googled it, looked at the list of results, weighed your options, and made the purchase, perhaps by clicking on one of the sponsored links that accompanied your search. Today you might still do that, but increasingly you might pose the question “What running shoes should I buy?” to your friends on Facebook, or maybe write “Who knows about training for marathons?” on Twitter. By the time shopping service Groupon sends you (and 25 of your friends) an offer for the perfect shoes and registration for a race, you’ll probably just pounce on it.
And what if you don’t even have a question to pose? What if you just need help? Consider the case of American graduate student James Buck. Egyptian police detained Buck for taking photographs of a protest in a city outside Cairo. Using his cellphone and his Twitter account, Buck broadcast a single word, “arrested.” Buck’s network alerted officials at the University of California at Berkeley, who ultimately got the U.S. State Department and a local lawyer involved. Buck was out of jail in 24 hours. Try that with a keyword search.
This is the phenomenon Google is up against. In the decade-plus since Page and Brin came up with PageRank, the web and the way we use it have changed dramatically. As Buck’s example shows, the web experience is increasingly mobile and social. We take it everywhere, and are connected almost all the time. Google needs to find real success in this new world — or invent the next major evolution of the web. It isn’t easy to create new multibillion-dollar businesses, but the rewards are great for the companies that do: Consider former Google ally Apple (AAPL), which has dominated add-on businesses (music players, retail) that are more profitable than the one that brought it prominence (computers). Apple is just killing it, and it is now the most valuable technology company in the world, with a market cap of 6 billion vs. Google’s 6 billion. Thus far Google has been tight-lipped about plans for a world beyond search. Marissa Mayer, head of search at Google, says the company doesn’t provide financial guidance, but contends that Google doesn’t need a huge second act, a collection of smaller businesses will suffice. The original search business will always dwarf any subsequent new units. And Page, Brin, and Google CEO Eric Schmidt simply haven’t articulated a vision for Google’s future. “That is what is scaring investors,” says Sameet Sinha, a senior analyst with JMP Securities in San Francisco. “There is no clear path toward what Google is doing, or wants to do.”

There are good reasons why companies, and tech companies in particular, want to maintain the mantle of Growth Enterprise. For starters, Wall Street values you differently. A growth company stock commands a premium price/earnings multiple based on its future potential that, in turn, helps it lure employees with stock options. Just as important, being a growth company affords employees and founders (and even shareholders) a huge psychological boost: You’re driving the economy, you’re changing the world. Facebook and Twitter are packed with engineers who’ve left formerly hot tech companies. As soon as early adopters smell a whiff of last year’s technology, they are on to something new.
That particular odor has never attached itself to Google since it launched in 1998, crushing all comers. You may recall AltaVista, Infoseek, Lycos, and HotBot. Google’s edge was better technology (see “smart engineers,” above), so it must be somewhat worrisome in Mountain View that Bing is gaining in popularity — Microsoft sites had about a 12.7% share of searches in June, according to comScore, up from 12.1% in May — partly due to its interface and other features. Indeed, Google has dispatched Ben Ling, a former YouTube wizard, to help improve the quality of its mainstay business.
“Google is not the hot company anymore,” says Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce.com (CRM). “Their stock has been mostly flat for five or six years now. How can you claim to be a leader with equity performance like that? That’s starting to look like Microsoft or Yahoo (YHOO). They have to get into some other place, and quickly.”
Microsoft is an apt comparison, except the software company found a second engine of growth to supplement its Windows computer operating system business eight years after MS-DOS hit the market. That business would become Office, the world’s most profitable application software, which today accounts for roughly 40% of Microsoft’s earnings. Of course, Microsoft has been struggling since to find its next big winner. Its server business chugs along. Its gaming console, Xbox, could still be an engine of growth, but it hasn’t moved the needle yet. Once Office saturated the workplace and then some, Microsoft lost its growth-company status.
So what is Google’s best shot? It won’t be international growth. Google dominates search in developed countries, and it will be a long slog in other parts of the world, such as Russia and China. (In China, where Google recently renewed its license despite strained relations with the government, Google’s 30% share trails China’s homegrown search king, Baidu (BIDU).) Google has plenty of real estate on the web to which it can attach more advertising, such as Google Maps and Google Images. And indeed, during the recession Google boosted its ad revenues by opening up inventory on its sites to marketers. But those are incremental gains, not a big new source of revenue.
Searching for Google’s next big thing
The company’s recent acquisitions and product launches fall into four main avenues of business: the mobile Internet (Android, AdMob), display advertising (splashier, graphics-heavy ads with DoubleClick), YouTube and video, and applications. A fifth area, social networking, is likely to be a big push for Google and holds the most potential. The company is widely rumored to be pursuing a “Google Me” project to do battle with Facebook.
Google does not report specific financials of businesses outside of search, but Sandeep Aggarwal, an Internet and software analyst with Caris & Co., estimates that mobile, display, YouTube, and apps generated about .5 billion in revenue in 2009, and this year should bring in about .1 billion in sales. On a bottom-line basis, that translates to about .44 in earnings per share this year. That’s peanuts today — Google is expected to earn per share in 2010 — but those are areas that are already outpacing traditional search in their rates of growth.
Amazingly, Google’s biggest and most promising opportunity to date, its successful Android operating platform for mobile phones, doesn’t produce much revenue or profit for Google — by design. The company in 2007 made the technology available to all comers in a bid to make the web more accessible on smartphones and in turn to encourage consumers to do more Google searches on their mobile devices. The strategy worked. Encouraged by this easy access to Android, handset makers began churning out multimedia phones, and the Android platform has been a consumer success: Google says some 160,000 new Android devices are activated each day, and device makers from Motorola (MOT) to HTC have all released popular phones on the Android platform. But Google doesn’t make gobs of money on those devices. (Google dabbled in phones but discontinued its Nexus One after only six months.) Apple, on the other hand, also stoked the smartphone market with its iOS, but with very different financial results: Last year the company posted an estimated billion in iPhone sales, a benefit of making the hardware and the software.
So where will Google’s next billion come from? It may not come from one blockbuster new business but rather from a handful of smaller opportunities. Google insiders are optimistic about YouTube, which accounts for 10% of all the time spent online worldwide, according to comScore. (The only greater time-suck on the web is Facebook, at 17%. We’ll get back to social networking.) Four years after buying the money-losing video site for .6 billion, Google seems to have figured out a way to eke out operating profits by selling video and display ads against a growing pool of professionally produced programming, including infomercials and other content created by marketers. Likewise, Google’s .1 billion acquisition of DoubleClick, the ad exchange that’s been folded into Google’s display network, will help expand Google’s ability to place multimedia and display ads on websites, including its own properties: It essentially hopes to do for online display what it has done with text ads. But few analysts see those businesses, in the short term at least, becoming Google’s next huge follow-on business — its Office equivalent, to use the Microsoft analogy.
Could its Office equivalent be, well, an Office equivalent? It’s a long shot, but one of the more profitable efforts at Google, and one that doesn’t have a thing to do with advertising, is its nascent business-software operation, Google Apps. For an annual licensing fee of per head, Google provides corporate customers with Gmail, collaboration tools, and other services that are delivered via the Internet. Some companies have started ditching traditional software vendors (including Microsoft) for the Google Apps’ cheapness and flexibility (adding or dropping a new account takes just a few clicks). In June, Google announced that more than 2 million businesses were using Google Apps for Enterprise. That sounds like a big number, but analysts peg revenue from Apps this year at about 0 million, or just 5 per business. Nikesh Arora, Google’s president of global sales operations and business development, told analysts at a technology conference in June that he expects the number of apps customers to double in the next few years.
The net effect of all these efforts? Analyst Aggarwal pegs revenue from Google’s nonsearch businesses at billion to billion in 2013. For any other company, that might be enough, but Aggarwal estimates that the company’s search revenue will be about billion three years down the road. In that context, nonsearch revenue still isn’t enough to make a huge difference in how Google is valued. For the foreseeable future Google will remain a search company.

The real shift going on within the Internet
Mike McCue has had a front-row seat watching the web grow up, and as far as he is concerned, the search box is all about the past. McCue was an early Netscape guy, and he recently launched tablet software company Flipboard, which takes all your Facebook updates, your Twitter feeds, all the news sites you like and subscribe to, and in a very elegant way publishes a constantly updated magazine of text, photos, and video. “There is no need to do a search,” McCue says. “We almost view it as a bug if we have the user search for something.”
At Google, where every problem is waiting to be solved by some form of search query, that is tantamount to blasphemy. But Flipboard sums up the shift going on within the Internet, one that is arguably the biggest change to the web and the way we use it since Google came on the scene. Your network simply provides you with answers, stories to read, bargains to buy — and you often don’t even need to ask a question.
In this new phase of the web, one of the largest threats to Google and its core search business is the expanding Facebook footprint around the world. Not only because social networks (and those used for work like LinkedIn fall into that same category) offer a substitute for search for consumers, but also because they offer a substitute for advertisers as well. In display advertising, for example, Facebook has a 16% share of the roughly billion market, according to comScore (Google sites have 2.4% of the market), and advertisers say they’re looking for more ways to plug into Facebook.
“Facebook has got Google in its sights,” says Debra Aho Williamson, a senior analyst with eMarketer. “Advertisers get the best of both worlds — a mass audience but also the ability to target more than anyone else. Who are the advertisers? In a lot of cases, they’re Google’s advertisers.”
Most alarming to Google is that much of this new social and real-time world is closed off to Google’s core search business, and its index of the world’s information. Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter are essentially “closed” platforms. “It’s a growing chink in their armor,” says a former Googler now working at a popular social network. “They know that. The question is, What can they do about it?”
Google’s Mayer believes the answer lies in delivering better-quality — almost intuitive — search results. Mayer calls this implicit or passive search. It’s the sort of thing that makes connections between, say, a friend who is an amateur expert on travel in Australia and your upcoming trip Down Under. A keyword search could not only flag hotels and tourist hot spots but also find blog posts, e-mails, messages, and even pose questions to your friend about where to go shopping or dining in Sydney — without bothering the rest of your network. “Who you are, your context, what you are doing, who your friends are — if all of that comes in as the search input,” she says, “what is the right output?” (The key word in her quote? “Friends.”)
Mayer won’t say what Google is building (perhaps the rumored “Google Me” service?), but clearly she is pushing the company in a more social direction, which means changing users’ perceptions of Google. “You need to create a place where it’s okay to be social,” Mayer says. Google doesn’t have that yet, and in fact, its efforts so far have been widely panned: Remember Google Buzz, which drew the ire of consumers for automatically sharing Gmail users’ lists of friends? If would-be rivals are worried, they aren’t letting on. “Google is smart to figure out how to make its stuff social,” says Chris Cox, head of product at Facebook.
But critics question whether Google can make the leap. “They are just not that good at it,” says Tom Coates, until recently the head of product at Yahoo’s defunct Brickhouse lab. “Google is very good at building these utility-type products — search, e-mail, and messaging. They are sort of like the power company of the Internet. But what they lack is a sense of how people share and collaborate.”
Coates’s point is that you don’t have friends on Google, you have contacts and tasks. These services reflect an engineering culture that’s all about utility, but one that makes it hard for the company to create something that’s friendly and social. But if Google can change its utilitarian ways, the company stands a real chance of tapping into that next growth engine. Imagine if it added that social layer to its core search business and to Android, and blew it out on YouTube, giving people a reason to hang out on Google sites for long periods. Advertisers would come flocking. If it can get that right, as the former Googler now working in social media sees it, “Google would be unstoppable.” Just like it used to be.

Whichever you are, for as long as you are a webmaster or a web publisher and you need cash, affiliate marketing may work well for you. With affiliate marketing, you may get a lot of cash pouring into your bank account easily. And if your website is rich in great contents and you want to earn more profit, why not get into the Google Adsense program as well?
Why Affiliate Marketing?
Well, simply because affiliate marketing is the easiest and probably the best way to earn profits online, unless otherwise you are a businessman and would rather sell your own products online than advertise other businessman’s products on your site. But even online retailers can benefit from affiliate marketing programs, because affiliate marketing actually works for merchants as well as it works for the affiliates.
Affiliate marketing, simply said, is a relationship or agreement made between two websites, with one site being the merchant’s website and the other being the affiliate’s site. In the relationship, the affiliate agrees to let the merchant advertise his products on the affiliate’s site. The merchant, on the other hand, would agree to pay the affiliate in whatever method they have agreed into. This would generally mean easy income for the affiliate, as he would do nothing but place the retailer’s ad on his site. This would also be very beneficial for the merchant, as getting affiliates to advertise their products would be a lot more affordable than hiring an advertising firm to promote their products.
There are a variety of methods on how the merchant would compensate the affiliate for his services, and for the webmaster, these methods simply translates to the method by which he would earn easy cash. Among the more common methods of compensation are the pay-per-click method, the pay-per-lead method, and the pay-per-sale method. The pay-per-click method is the method most preferred by affiliates, for their site’s visitor would only have to visit the advertiser’s site for them to gain money. The other two methods, on the other hand, are better preferred by merchants, as they would only have to compensate you if your visitor becomes one of their registrants or if the visitor would actually buy their products.
Getting much profit on affiliate marketing programs, however, does not depend so much on the compensation method is it does on the traffic generated by your site. A website that can attract more visitors would generally have the greater chance of profiting in affiliate marketing programs.
What about Google Adsense?
Google Adsense is actually some sort of an affiliate marketing program. In Google Adsense, Google act as the intermediary between the affiliates and the merchants. The merchant, or the advertiser, would simply sign up with Google and provide the latter with text ads pertaining to their products. These ads, which is actually a link to the advertiser’s website, would then appear on Google searches as well as on the websites owned by the affiliates, or by those webmasters who have signed up with the Google Adsense program.
While one can find a lot of similarities between Google Adsense and other affiliate marketing programs, you can also see a lot of differences. In Google Adsense, all the webmaster has to do is place a code on his website and Google takes care of the rest. The ads that Google would place on your site would generally be relevant to the content of your site. This would be advantageous both for you and for the advertiser, as the visitors of your site would more or less be actually interested with the products being advertised.
The Google Adsense program compensates the affiliate in a pay-per-click basis. The advertisers would pay Google a certain amount each time their ad on your site is clicked and Google would then forward this amount to you through checks, although only after Google have deducted their share of the amount. Google Adsense checks are usually delivered monthly. Also, the Google Adsense program provides webmasters with a tracking tool that allows you to monitor the earnings you actually get from a certain ad.
So, where do all of these lead us to?
Where else but to profits, profits and even more profits! Affiliate marketing programs and the Google Adsense program simply work, whether you are the merchant or the affiliate. For the merchant’s side, a lot of money can be saved if advertising effort is concentrated on affiliate marketing rather than on dealing with advertising firms. For the webmaster, you can easily gain a lot of profits just by doing what you do best, and that is by creating websites. And if you combine all your profits from both the Google Adsense program and other affiliate marketing programs, it would surely convert to a large amount of cash.

The new version of the Google Search Appliance allows workers to search traditional data, such as content management systems and file shares, as well as Google Docs and Google Sites. The system displays results from systems that reside on premise and cloud-based content.
Google Cloud Connect
Google Connect delivers search results from a single point of entry, decreasing the amount of time spent on searching company files and making it easier to collaborate between coworkers and departments. Google states: “Easier access to collaborative documents, spreadsheets, presentations and sites with Cloud Connect speeds up how quickly coworkers can complete projects”.
People Search, part of the new Search Appliance, makes it easier to find subject matter experts within a company and contact coworkers related to a search keyword. The application allows organizations to index their employee data, like interests, department, knowledge and physical location. The search query returns a list of team members related to its keyword phrase.
Google has added other search functionality that make it easier to find and share information. Cloud Connect can find date in Twitter, blogs and industry websites through Google Site Search.
Cloud Applications
Traditionally, companies hosted their information on-site. That is changing at an accelerated rate and cloud-based applications are increasingly popular. Technology providers are tuning into this demand and Google’s version, Google Apps, is widely used today.
Now, over 3 million businesses use Google Apps, storing a vast amount of information on Google’s cloud servers worldwide. That data is now more searchable than ever with Cloud Connect. Although relatively small, Google Apps is gaining traction. Google has not yet released any data on the number of business using the Google Search Appliance.
Google continues to make plans to expand its enterprise computing share and, with Cloud Connect, it takes a step in the direction of Microsoft’s Sharepoint software. Sharepoint lets employees search for files and other information within their company repositories.
Google Search Appliance
Do not confuse Google Search Appliance with the Google Search Engine.
The latter lets users perform searches for anything on the Internet. The Search Engine Results Page (SERP) returns results relevant to the search term. The websites that are listed on the SERP can use local Search Engine Optimization (SEO) – like SEO Denver – regional or international SEO to optimize their website for any search keywords that are relevant to their product or service.

Before going on to the real topic of this SEO news let us first review a little about Google’s Analytics Intelligence. Well to begin with, in simple words, Analytics Intelligence is Google’s new tool that allows you to set up alerts. It is like a 24-hour dedicated assistant whose main focus is your website’s analytics.
This is how it is described by Google (analytics.blogspot.com): “Analytics Intelligence constantly monitors your website’s traffic. Anytime something significant happens, it adds an automatic alert in your Intelligence reports.”

If your bounce rate suddenly jumps on one of your referrals, Analytics Intelligence creates an alert. Of course, it’s up to you to go find out that the bounce rate jumped because someone inadvertently changed the landing page. But you might not have noticed that there was a problem that needed fixing if your trusty assistant hadn’t alerted you.
An automatic alert in Google Intelligence is triggered when the expected performance of your website differs abruptly. Google Analytics monitors the past and current activity of your website and lets you know through values when something unusual happens. The reason why these automatic alerts can prove to be so useful is that they often bring your attention to website traffic that you might never have thought to be important before.
Navigate to the Intelligence reports and you’ll see three reports — Daily Alerts, Weekly Alerts, and Monthly Alerts. Daily Alerts contains all the alerts that are based on daily data. Weekly Alerts contains alerts based on weekly data. Monthly Alerts contains, you guessed it, alerts based on monthly data.
When you look at your alerts, you’ll notice that your trusty assistant has already gone through your historical data and posted alerts. This highlights a key feature of Analytics Intelligence: you don’t have to do anything — alerts automatically get posted to your account. Now that you have a broad idea about Analytics Intelligence, here are some types of custom alerts you can set up in Analytics Intelligence in Google.
You can set up your own custom alerts to detect changes in page views, visitors, new visitors, bounce rates and others by day, week or month.
If you have setup goals to track your landing page conversions, you can setup alerts to get notified of sudden changes in goal conversions.
You could choose to receive alerts via email. You can also simply login to your Google Analytics account.
You can change the alert sensitivity for all of the above by using a slider if you get annoyed to see too many alerts. This slide can be increased if you like more number of alerts. Finally, as with the case of automatic alerts, the best way to learn about Google Intelligence custom alerts is to try them out on your own set of data.
