A Look At Spam Through Google

A Look At Spam Through Google

Web Designers do not need to learn about SEO to make it easier for Google to index a website. Many web design firms use Google’s free tools to optimize a website for small business clients.
Matt Cutts made a ten-minute keynote speech in 2008, at a Web 2.0 conference, called “What Google Knows About Spam.”  This is a constant struggle for web design firms. SEO wants a website with balanced content.  Small businesses want content that sells their product.  Google doesn’t want to see anything that reflects spam. The video is available on his blog. It is an eye opening look into SEO and how hard Google hits spam. http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/what-google-knows-about-spam/  I refer to this one, because it is easy for a non-SEO pro to understand. Most web design firms, and web design professionals spend very little time learning SEO techniques.

Matt Cutts has worked for Google for 8 years. He wrote hundreds of articles on search engine placement and the dangers of spam. Most web designers are unaware that Google uses 128 different elements to rank, or penalize, a page. Most web designers focus on linking and ignore the rest.

Black hat SEO is nothing new. Keyword Spam is nothing new. Web designer and black-hat SEO services have always used keywords with no relevance on a website. These spam pages are now easy for search engines to recognize. They use script-generated content, are full of spelling mistakes, and keyword phrases. Or, the meta tags are not reflected in the content. Keyword text spam is often blended with the background, invisible on browsers, but picked up by search engines. One common trick is to make 1 index page for search engines, and 1 for the website.

Matt’s reminds web designers that Google has a tool to help become relisted if you inadvertently make a mistake:  google.com/web designers/. Any Web designer should register their website with this tool as soon as it goes live. If Google notices the website has been hacked, or the web designer, or small business, hired an unscrupulous SEO firm, then a notice is sent to the webmaster, and hopefully, the web designer. This addresses the situation before the web designer’s site is banned.

One of the most common complaints is that DIY web designers who follow all the rules, and their website are still excluded from indexing and Google’s rank. Cutts warns people that the secret to success is to write for people, not search engines, not for ad copy, and to make sure that you have a keyword density below 4%, and a keyword weight above 70%. This is not always possible, but it should be attempted. It is also important to run a website through a ‘search engine view’ SEO tool, to make sure that the keywords designated by the small business, are recognized by the search engine. In fact, it is common for search engines to consider Home and AboutUS as the primary keywords for a website.

Cutts says, new material falls into the common-sense category. It’s all about your small business. “If I’m a plumber in Iowa, I may want to write about some of the strange things that happen to me on the job, or the five most common ways to fix a toilet,” he says. “That kind of content can get really popular, and it’s a great way to get links.” Folks will post your piece on one of the social media sites. And with links comes higher Google rankings. (source: USAToday)
Here are a few tips to avoid problems.

Do not:
* build more than 50 links to a website in one week
* pay for links
* put paid links on your website
* stack keywords
* Let Keyword Density exceed 4%
* Have a Keyword Weight less than 60%
* link to FAA/directories/link farms
* make sure no one clones your web-pages
* Use doorway pages
* Use font the same color as the background
* Stack web pages with typos
* Clone pages
* Post a lot of reviews unless you use <no follow> codes

These should help protect your website from being banned and penalized. If the website/blog is already penalized, then fix the above problems. Sign into your Google Account and look on the right side of the dashboard. There is a ‘reconsideration’ link. Complete it, and then hopefully, Google will re-index the website and return the website’s page rank.

These tips are designed to help small business owners find a reputable web design firm who understands the balance between SEO design and web design techniques. Both are important if you want to rank on Google.

6 Reasons You Don’t Get Traffic From Google

6 Reasons You Don’t Get Traffic From Google

If your website receives very little traffic from Google, it should be cause for concern. After all, search traffic from Google is free and can help you save lots of money by minimizing the need for paid advertising. Below, we list six different reasons why your website may not be getting traffic from Google.

Poor Search Engine Optimization

One of the biggest reasons why Google doesn’t send traffic to websites is poor search engine optimization. Some things that cause your website to be poorly optimized include:

Lack of unique titles and meta tags. When your web pages show up in search engines, a title and description is shown. If you haven’t created your own titles and descriptions, Google simply selects an appropriate snippet of your content. But by creating your own unique titles and meta descriptions, you can control what prospective visitors see and compel them to visit your website. Inflated source code. Believe it or not, Google only indexes a certain amount of content per web page. So the smaller your webpage is, the more likely that it will be indexed in its entirety. Poor placement of content. Because Google only indexes a finite portion of a web page, starting from the top, content placement is very important. You want to make sure that your main content is always towards the top of each page.

By optimizing your web pages, Google will be able to discern the subject of your site and display it in search engine results pages.

Excessive Use of Ads

Google is on high alert against spammers. So if your website contains an excessive amount of ads and little content, or if your website is new and contains AdSense, Google will often relegate the website to the Google Sandbox or supplementary index. This will mean that your website will get little to no search engine traffic.

To remedy this situation, be sure to serve high quality content and wait before deploying AdSense on new websites.

Duplicate Content

Do you write your own unique content, or does your site simply republish articles that are hosted elsewhere? Or perhaps your website just aggregates content. To get Google to show you favor, you will need unique content.

Freshness

How often do you add new content? Google neglects websites that don’t regularly add new content. So if you have a blog, it is probably a good idea to have at least one new post per week. For other websites, new content should be added at least twice every month. If you do not have new content, consider revising/updating an existing page.

Perhaps Google doesn’t know about you.

Make sure that you have submitted your website to Google. Additionally, make sure that your pages are well-linked. Finally, you should also consider submitting a sitemap to Google, which will ensure that Google knows about all of your website’s pages.

Low Pagerank or Penalties

Google calculates the relative worth of a web page (pagerank) based on the number of websites that link to that page. So, it is important to regularly seek new linking opportunites. At the same time, however, it is important to be careful of how you get links and who you decide to link to. Believe it or not, Google may penalize your website if you link to questionable sites or buy links. Also, be sure that you are not employing any black hat seo tactics.

Getting Google to send you traffic isn’t hard. Just employ these tips, and you will start to see results. For additional information, see our article Why Google Isn’t Visiting Your Website.

Web Site Optimization

Web Site Optimization

Website Optimisation

Google Search Engines

I know I’m of stating the obvious for the wide majority of us, however I have to cover it for the few that may not know. Google will more than likely index your site regardless, but if you want to fast track the course of action and tell Google that your site exists and to send a bot over to index it then simply go to www dot google dot com/addurl and add your URL “www dot yourwebsiteaddress dot com” to make sure Google can find your site.

Website Optimisation -> Hierarchy Management:

In order for the spiders to index your site easily you need to make sure you have a . The easiest way I can think to explain this is: Think of your (C:) Drive Folder, you don’t just put all your files straight into your (C:) Drive, as you know there are thousands of different files in there and they are all structured under the (C:) Drive hierarchy.

You have folders like your Documents folder, Pictures Folder, Music Folder… and this is exactly the way you should constitute your website. By making subfolders that not only make it easier for you to find what you want but when Google comes along to index your site it will easily find all the files, you can put all of html text together at one level because google doesn’t have a problem with this but you will need to put all your auxiliary files in a hierarchical order at the same level. Organize this logically.

There is a picture of this on my blog, just click the link titled Website Optimisation in the resource box of this article.

All your html text files would be in the resource folder. “See the photo on my blog” If you structure your site in a similar way its no problem for you to find your files and easier for Google to index your site.

Website Optimization -> Music, Images, Videos

HTML is easy for google to find and index but Music, Images & Video isn’t that easy, so you need to help the Googlebot out a bit.

Give all your multimedia files a good description using alt= <”description of picture”>

Give all your picture files an acurate depiction when you name them.
Give a good explanation in the description field when you can.

Here’s an example: I named the picture on my blog, Website Optimization. This helps Google find the picture and certainly wont hurt my my search rankings. You should also do the same with the description & alt tagsalt=<”Website Optimization”> There is a second picture on my blog post named Website Optimisation I have done the same; only I have spelled it the way we would here in Australia. Just testing to see if it will help google find this post in both .com & .com.au search engines.

Web Site Optimisation -> Title Tags

Always use the google keyword tool to search for good search volume keywords to use in your title, that doesn’t necessarily meanthat the higher the number of searches the better.

There can be some pretty tough competition for these high volume keywords. Just use keywords that best suit your post or article and do everything you need to do to get on the First Page of Google. There is more information about this on our blog site.

It’s bestto keep your Title tags as short and concise as possible they need to do two jobs “get your visitors attention” & attracting highly qualified targeted audience through the selection of your Title keywords.

The title of this article is a good example. I chose it after going through the Google Keyword Tool and finding that Web Site Optimisation was getting 14,800 searches world wide per month and Web Site Optimization was getting 27,000 searches globally per month. There was definately higher level keywords but the contest for these keywords is fierce. Thats not to say that you should totally forget these higher volume keywords just mix it up a bit.

I know this title didn’t attract you because you were searching for Home Business Opportunity, MLM or Network Marketing, you are evidently looking for better ways increase site traffic. Our site is only a couple of months old and right now we are generating between 400 – 500 No Cost, Free hits per day using Only Free Marketing Strategies and the trend continues upwards. Thats more than 10,000 hits per month on a very conservative quantity and it won’t be long before we are getting 20,000 hits per month, more than 10% of these are new visitors.

A big percentage of the marketing we are doing is yet to come into play. We still have a lengthy list of Articles in line waiting to be approved and put out there on the net. Highly targeted traffic is one of the most important entities in the internet universe. Any website owner or administrator recognizes the importance of driving traffic to a website. The success of any website does not rely entirely on the site itself. You may have a terrific idea for a website, offer an excellent product or service, or have an exceptionally designed site with superb content, but if you do not use the right strategies to advertise, your site would not attract the high traffic you need. Attracting targeted traffic is a task that should be taken seriously for any site to succeed or make a profit. Fortunately, there are internet-marketing tools that help the website marketer to drive traffic to his website. One of the most significant, and effective, of these tools is Google’s Adwords. Adwords is one of Google’s advertising services.

How does Google Adwords work? Google is the largest search engine on the web receiving over 200 million queries each day through its various services. As Google is the most popular search engine today, webmasters are keen on having their websites achieve a higher ranking in the search engine results it provides. A high ranking can mean high traffic for that website. The search engine results page is also a great venue for advertisers to promote a product or service through ads and links. Consequently, Google launched its Adwords service, as a way for businesses to advertise products and services to a targeted audience. Google Adwords can guarantee instant traffic. In this service, Google displays relevant text based ads within its search engine results page termed as “Sponsored Links”. Whenever a particular keyword is searched on, these relevant links appear in a separate section giving excellent exposure to the sites listed.

How do you use Google Adwords? First, you have to open an account with the Google Adwords Service. Then, you should indicate your target language and country. This is important because you would not want your products advertised in countries where your product or service cannot be sold. Afterwards, you should now create an ad group. This involves designing the ad, selecting keywords and determining maximum cost per click that you are willing to spend and defining bid amounts. The most important step in creating a successful Adwords campaign is selecting an effective title tag that will catch the attention of your target audience. The title tag, generally a short phrase, is the most important part of your Adwords campaign so make sure that it is attractive and catchy. You should describe the website clearly and accurately. The most effective advertising conveys a clear message to the target audience. With a clear message, you will be attracting qualified leads, which can eventually convert to sale. Thus, the importance of selecting the right keywords cannot be overemphasized.

There are keyword variations you can adapt to reach more prospects. Using these varieties, misspellings and derivatives can help increase the chance of your ads being served. Broad match is targeting keywords in a loosely defined manner. Here, the ads appear based on the keywords that have been queried by other users as opposed to exact match, which calls for the keyword to match the query exactly. Meanwhile, a keyword phrase set to phrase match will only appear when the exact phrase is searched on. A negative keyword is helpful in filtering unrelated pages.

After you have decided on what title tag to use in your ad, you must now define a budget in order to maximize exposure. Google Adwords recommend a daily budget for each campaign. However, you should determine a budget that is suitable and affordable. You should also determine the maximum cost per click. Google will offer a recommended cost per click, but you do not have to stick with this. Usually, a number one position is not ideal as it can also attract unwanted traffic and useless clicks. A number two position is more preferred as it can filter useless clicks and provide traffic with a higher conversion rate.

To conclude, Google Adwords is an excellent strategy and tool in giving your site maximum exposure. Nevertheless, Google Adwords should not be your sole advertising campaign. It will definitely help you find the all-important, highly targeted traffic you need.

The Importance of Unique Meta Descriptions on Every Page For a Road Full of Google SEO Success

The Importance of Unique Meta Descriptions on Every Page For a Road Full of Google SEO Success

Browsing through hundreds, maybe thousands of websites in a work week, I am continually amazed at the laziness of some web developers. I know how useful copy and paste can be, but believe me, in SEO, uniqueness is King. If you are a customer to some fancy web development firm, make sure to check your Meta description tags on every page. Google is notorious for devaluing a site whose Meta descriptions are repeated in every page. Take advantage of the power of the Meta description tag.

Most people get lazy when creating pages in the areas that are most important in ranking. While you may have a ,000 website, the sad fact of today’s internet is that you either need one of two elements to get web site success as far as traffic is concerned: a large budget, or great ranking.

Google SEO is increasingly affected by the type of Meta description and how well it fits into the theme of the page, and the web site. Once you have gotten all the right elements in place, begin brainstorming on a catchy way to describe the focus of your page, while describing a call-to-action.

If your site is about apples, and your page about red apples, you could create a powerful Meta description, unique to that page that could read something like this:

“Look to our delicious red apple recipes, and find out what you have been missing. The best red apples usually have a ripe texture, not too soft. Read more!”

That small description mentions some assets about red apples, while using the keyword twice in a description that will peak the interest of the reader.

In Google search results, the description or snippet used usually comes from the Meta description. You can be less description and optimize for more keywords in the title, rather than the description. This strategy is sure to give your web site ranking a boost.

This guide should give you a good starting point to help with your Google SEO efforts. Keep an eye of the next guide, which will help expand on the topic of Search Engine Optimization.

Take a look at our site which contains detailed information on Google SEO topics to help you get your site’s ranking in the top 10 Google Search Engine Results.

Best SEO Tips For Small Business

Best SEO Tips For Small Business

Search engine optimisation is something that all business owners with a website need to be aware of. If you’ve got a site and want to drive relevant traffic to that site, you need to know what to do to help the search engines get a good understanding of your business, so they can rank it for the terms you feel are most suitable for visitors. It’s not about tricking the search engines, or trying to boost traffic numbers in general. You need to see an increase in relevant traffic to you site (10 relevant visitors are far better than 1000 non relevant visitors, who leave your site straight away), and Google wants to provide searchers with a list of high quality sites, relevant to their search query.

1. Research your keywords: Make sure that you know what people type into Google and the other search engines when looking for your products or services. Research into how competitive these phrases are – are there any phrases that are relevant, but aren’t quite so competitive? These are more likely to give you the results you want. Also think about plurals and synonyms.

2. Make sure each single page on your site has a unique title tag. If you’ve done your keyword research, you should also aim to use keyword/phrases in the title tag too.

3. Additionally, make sure that all the meta descriptions for each page are unique too. Since the search engines mostly show the title and description of a page in the search results, make sure your descriptions correlates to your title, includes keywords, and has some kind of call to action that persuades the searcher to click on your link rather than the result above or below you.

4. Using your keywords and phrases, look at the headers within your pages. Headers tags are like the headlines of a newspaper – your H1 header should contain your primary keyphrases, with any H2 headers containing your secondary phrases.

5. Look at your copy- does this contain keyphrases? Make sure you don’t keyword stuff your copy though – aim for about a 3% ratio of keywords to copy. The content of your site should be written with your visitors in mind first, SEO second, so make sure it still makes sense and adds value.

6. Analyse your website structure. Do you have a lot of deep pages, hidden within subfolder after subfolder? Aim to keep the architecture of your site nice and flat – you don’t want to make it difficult for search engines or visitors to find content. Try and keep everything within two clicks of the homepage.

7. Going back to content – how fresh is the content on your site? Google and the other search engines love new and unique content. So try and update your website on a regular basis. This could be through a blog, press releases, or new product pages. Just keep it fresh – no one likes anything stale!

8. Linking…. oh linking, everyone is always going on about the number links to your site…why? Because it’s important! Each link is like a vote of confidence in your site, so the more you have (from reputable, high quality sites), the better. Building the number of quality links to your site takes time. Register with industry directories, local directories, become active in social media, make the most of social bookmarking, create amazing relevant content that people will want to link to, create articles and post them out to article sites, comment in forums… there’s so many activities you can do to increase the number of links to your site. It’s an investment – in time and sometimes money, but it’s worth it.

9. Register with Google Webmaster and submit your xml sitemap. This is an xml file includes all the pages of your website in a way that makes it easy for Google to reference and index. Google Webmaster will also tell you if there are any errors with your site, what some popular keywords are surrounding your site, some of the links pointing to your site and more.

10. Register with Google Analytics and start using it on a regular basis to monitor your site. Google Analytics is a free peice of software that enables you to track all the activity on your site. It’s actually a bit scary the amount of information it can give you. But for a small business owner, or marketing professional, it’s an invaluable tool that can help you improve your website performance and growth.

This is just the tip of the SEO iceberg – there’s so much to SEO and it’s constantly changing and evolving. At the end of the day though, it’s all about creating a quality website, adding regular quality content and being active in the world wide web. It’s not rocket science, but it does take time.

Google Adwords Guide – How To Avoid Google Adwords Pitfalls

If you have ever wanted to “crack the code” on the secret skills that keep the best Google AdWords pro’s in “the money” year after year… and do it fast, so you can start really making money in your business almost immediately… then this will be the most exciting thing you ever read.

Here is the story:

Every good marketer knows there are just three basic things behind winning AdWords campaigns — (1) a clickable attention getting ad… (2) a decent click-through rate… and (3) mastering the techniques keyword targeting. Oh yeah, have a great product to promote too, but we know you have a couple of good ones, right?

Some guys think they can buy their way to the top of Google AdWords…but it is frightfully expensive, I know…I tried that and failed, maybe you did too! You have seen them – top of the line websites with mega budgets bidding the ads sky-high so that a little marketer like you and I just can not hope to compete! So, you do not have the big bucks to throw away on Google AdWords! Most marketers do not and the cost of Google AdWords ad bid price is getting just plain…well, shameful!

Google is pocketing your money

Google is pocketing all your money just like she used to do mine! Many are searching the Internet for the “next big thing” to help them with running their Google AdWords campaigns. You know the story, you buy the next biggest hyped ebook or whatever and still it does not work like they said it would and your campaigns are still not making you the money you want! Well, that is NOT the end of the story…here is why.

The top Google AdWords pros are keeping a nasty secret from you. Sure, they create the new ebooks and courses to show their expertise, and even occasionally “reveal” ONLY SOME of their favourite tips on handling Google AdWords and show off just a few of their own hard won tips and tricks…

One thing the “AdWords Guru Pros” do not want you to have, is the knowledge or the REAL SECRETS of the science of Google AdWords that will give you the pro-level AdWords skills, that will make you just as smart as they are!

THE REAL SECRETS

I discovered REAL SECRETS of the science of Google AdWords when I watched the Google AdWords Guide DVD. It was like going back to school, having a teacher standing in front of class or over your shoulders teaching you. As I watched the AdWords Guide DVD I started to see things I was not doing right with my AdWords Campaigns. By the time I finished watching the DVDs I was armed to Beat Google at Her Own Game and avoid AdWords mine field and her Slaps.

Whether you agree with me or not, many have a busy lifestyle and some finding it difficult to read and to understand. Educational Videos come very handy in this respect. Unlike teachers in a literal classroom you can rewind and replay points that you need more understand.

When you watch screen captured videos and commentary with the mouse moving on the screen showing you what to do, it feel so real, it gives a sense of someone standing by teaching you. One thing is to read about a story, but quite another to see it in action movie – on the screen. Some of us learn and comprehend more this way than to read, or what do you think?

The Guide To Google AdWords DVD will give you much more than you ever thought, is very interactive, taken you back to your classroom days. it has been especially designed to meet the needs of anyone who really want to succeed with Google AdWords campaigns. Owning and immersing yourself on the information in the DVD means you will suddenly have more campaigns with more ads making more money for you day and night!…
