Why Marketers Are Super-Excited About Promoted Tweets
Why Marketers Are Super-Excited About Promoted Tweets
Everyone remembers back when Yahoo!, Google, and more recently Facebook announced their advertising platforms. Now Twitter joins the crowd with Promoted Tweets. What does that mean?
Imagine Google just existing as a search engine without the pay-per-click ads appearing on the top and right column. Wouldn’t it be a great idea to allow businesses and advertisers to buy advertising space on a website that gets hundreds of millions of page views per day? Of course it would, and the business world will never be the same as a result.
Twitter Basics First
Twitter lets you write and read messages of up to 140 characters, or the very length of this sentence, including all punctuation and spaces. People add followers, who will automatically receive these ‘tweets’ and stay up to date about what the person tweeting is talking about. Some people have a few dozen followers, some celebrities have a few hundred thousand followers.
When someone tweets out a message that people think are worthy of sharing, they can ‘re-tweet’ this message or ‘forward’ it to their twitter followers list. Now the idea of promoted tweets changes everything.
What Do These Promoted Tweets Mean For Internet Marketers?
Now advertisers will be able to purchase paid advertising space on the twitter platform, (think adwords over at google), and tweets will be able to be seen by a wider audience. Twitter has grown by 1500% since it’s inception, and a lot of this growth has been due to internet marketers capitalizing on this social media platform for profit
What Will Users See?
You will start to see Tweets promoted by advertisers called out at the top of some Twitter.com search results pages. Twitter will attempt to measure whether the Tweets resonate with users and stop showing Promoted Tweets that don’t resonate. Promoted Tweets will be clearly labeled as “promoted” when an advertiser is paying, but in every other respect they will first exist as regular Tweets and will be organically sent to the timelines of those who follow a brand. Promoted Tweets will also retain all the functionality of a regular Tweet including replying, Retweeting, and favoriting. Only one Promoted Tweet will be displayed on the search results page.
